So, you don't have a 4k display (BTW, display is not a TV only, can also be a PC monitor), you cannot play the file (natively or downconverted),...

there's no standardised interface (for consumer use)...
but you still want to use 4k. It's either extreme ambition or masochism.

I don't want to discourage you, just to pinpoint that 4k is not ready for the public.

It's the same as 1080p/i, the numbers you have are used in the standard pretty much like the NTSC standard makes use of 525 scanlines. To split the hair, yes 2k is not 1080p, because it's a photographic term, not a cinematographic one, but the reason for 1080p was to accommodate 2k scans within a TV signal.

You can get 4K projectors , and they have been available for a few years. They have come down in price, but still quite expen$ive - not for the general public. But if you can afford a Red One + gear, then you can afford a 4K projector

@Ghitulescu

Of course I don't plan to use 4k. Not at all. I just wanted to push my video card to the limit to see if it was able to handle it.
Even because ATI says it supports 4K x 2K and level 5.1 videos. Looks like it doesn't, after all...

Edit: I don't know if I'm doing everything fine. I converted to 720p with constant quality at 10. Got a 78.9 Mbps file, and it plays fine and smooth. Then set quality to 4, got a 118 Mbps and still is OK.

2160p videos play fine on my ATI HD4670 using the overlay renderer.

What is this "overlay renderer"? Is it something I can activate/deactivate?

It's just the fastest (and simplest) renderer option in MPC-HC...

Indeed. I think it's called "Overlay Mixer".

D_S, do you use DXVA or software decoding for this? I'm assuming DXVA from the context..

Software; DXVA is laughably slow.

I see. I thought you were saying that your 4670's ASIC could handle 4K H.264 decode, which was SLIGHTLY unexpected.

I'm sure anyone with a modest dual core could play a "4k" video file if it's average bitrate was like 5mbps

I have an ATI 5750 card - UVD 2.2 - Win 7 x64 and Catalyst 10.8 -C2D-E7300

It is very difficult to play the new 4K videos by YouTube in CPU only at x1 speed. With the sample below I get ~18fps

Sample here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/41498552...7_fps.mp4.html

But the main problem is that DXVA mode to such clips -UHD- gives BSOD with VLC, MPC-HC internal DXVA codec, FFDshow DXVA and DivX DXVA.

WMP12 and PowerDVD 10 give black screen and audio decoding.

It SHOULD work according to ATI release notes, but it seems they haven't opened the feature yet or the ASIC of UVD 2.2 is not fast enough.

Centralization of some 4k samples :

3840x2160/29.970fps/50Mbits(Constant) or Mirror

3840x2160/119.880fps/100Mbits :
Girls.Generation.Oh.4in1.201002.HDTV.x264.2160p.120fps.DTSES.6.1ch.mkv

For Download : pressed the green button.

I also encoded sequences (the same as in the link given by Dark Shikari / CrowdRun_ParkJoy_DucksTakeOff_InToTree_OldTownCross), but into a single file.
The original 16-bit SGI Images are available here:
ftp://vqeg.its.bldrdoc.gov/HDTV/SVT_...ter_SVTdec05_/

Available in diferents, Framerate/Bitrate.

Quality Blu-Ray (equivalent to 1080p/25fps/30Mbits/BitPixel0.579) :
- 3840x2160/25fps/120Mbits/NormalMotion (only half of the images are encoded) or Mirror
- 3840x2160/25fps/120Mbits/SlowMotion (Frame Rate slows @ 25fps) or Mirror
- 3840x2160/50fps/240Mbits/NormalMotion/OriginalFramrate :
For this file, just remux (3840x2160/25fps/120Mbits/SlowMotion) with mkvtoolnix and change the framerate @ 50fps (50p).

Quality BD9 (equivalent to 1080p/25fps/9Mbits/BitPixel0.174) :
- 3840x2160/25fps/36Mbits/NormalMotion or Mirror
- 3840x2160/25fps/36Mbits/SlowMotion or Mirror
- 3840x2160/50fps/72Mbits/NormalMotion/OriginalFramrate :
For this file, just remux (3840x2160/25fps/36Mbits/SlowMotion) with mkvtoolnix and change the framerate @ 50fps (50p).

Lower quality (equivalent to 1080p/25fps/5.625Mbits/BitPixel0.109) :
- 3840x2160/25fps/22.5Mbits/SlowMotion :
For this file, just remux (3840x2160/50fps/45Mbits/NormalMotion/OriginalFramrate) with mkvtoolnix and change the framerate @ 25fps (25p).
- 3840x2160/50fps/45Mbits/NormalMotion/OriginalFramrate or Mirror

I also encoded various "RED" clips into a single file, original R3D files are available here:
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...th-a-Scarlet-X
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthr...M-X-REEL-R3D-s
http://www.bealecorner.org/red/test-080108/page2.html

Quality Blu-Ray (equivalent to 1080p/23.976fps/28.1Mbits/BitPixel0.566)
- 4096x2160/23.976fps/120Mbits or Mirror

Quality BD9 (equivalent to 1080p/23.976fps/8.45Mbits/BitPixel0.170)
- 4096x2160/23.976fps/36Mbits or Mirror

All my encoding is done in 3 pass

EDIT
One another : SINTEL
Original 4k png/tiff (16 or 8 bpp)

And official H264 version (equivalent to 1080p/24fps/11.6Mbits/BitPixel0.233) :
- 4096x1744/24fps/40Mbits

Thanks a lot, vanden! But it's going to take several days to direct download some of these files (2 Gb, for example). Maybe make a torrent with all these files and put it somewhere? For example, here: http://rutracker.org/forum/index.php

Maybe first commercial movie available to end users in 4K: http://timescapes.org
TimeScapes was shot in 5K resolution on Red Epic and Canon DLSR cameras, edited in 4K

Ok I just tested the x264 version (TimeScapes.2012.2304p.CineForm.x264-WiKi).

The resolution is not perfect all the time. Sometimes there are jagged edges ... it's better than 2K but not perfect all the time ...
TimeScapes1.jpg
TimeScapes2.jpg

If anyone has tested the Cineform version can confirm that the same thing ?

There is clearly some issue there.
Looks similar like when you interpret progressive footage as interlaced
