How can you Personalise your Backups.

I have posted this thread here because I am not sure if this would come under IFO editing or Subtitle editing, etc etc....
All I would like to know is, is it possible to add a precommand to your own backup DVD, so for example, instead of the disc displaying the usual crappy Warning scripts about copyrights, it will display, 'This DVD belongs to XXXXX' or whatever you want it to say...At least then, you KNOW they are your discs, as will everyone else know. The only reason I ask this is because I have encountered the situation where somebody borrowed a backup and they are trying to return a disc that I know is not my copy.
Any solutions are greatly welcomed....Thanks Guys

Create a bitmap (720*480 Ntsc or 576 Pal)with what you want displayed, encode using TMPGENC to m2v, author a vob file using IFOEDIT, and then use MENUEDIT to replace the warning with your created file. All the above programs are free to use, as you are most likely already familar with these tools.

If you want something simpler, and less likely to also be copied, place a comment in the "Provider ID" field. This is not easy with IfoEdit, but other hex editors allow you to enter ascii characters. The field is at offset 0x40 (64 dec) for 32 characters.
note: DVDShrink allows you to set this when doing a backup.

You could also place a simple text file created with notepad (or your favorite text editor) in the root directory of the DVD.

I think this is the first time I have to disagree with anything I've read/learned from you. You've certainly educated me with alot of technical stuff concerning IfoEdit and the DVD Stucture. Though you can't click on the Provider ID line since IFoedit says "Item is not editable", that's no problem because IfoEdit already has a built-in Hex/ASCII Editor. Here's a simple guide I've written for idj and others.

How to set the Provider ID using IfoEdit

Open up VIDEO_TS.IFO. Click on VMGM_MAT to highlight it.With that done, click on "HexEdit" button. This is what you'll see. The 32 bytes we're concerned about are highlighted in red.

Just click in ASCII column on the right side, to set your cursor. Optional: You can uncheck Hex checkbox in HexEdit window to not display the Hex values. Now type in any alphanumeric characters in CAPITAL letters. Remember now, you can't exceed more that 32 characters. Also, don't do any backspace or delete if you make a mistake. Just use your keyboard arrow keys and get back to were your error was and just type over for corrections. Here's an example.

Thanks Guys for your replys....
NOW,..I have followed 2COOLs reply beacuse, with all respect to the first two, I did not understand how to do what they suggested. My backup knowledge is very limited with IFOEdit and practically zero with programs like TMPGEnc. I use CloneDVD to make backups, which, as you might know, does all transcoding for you. It also writes to the blank disc which is why I favoured it over DVDShrink. Perhaps this is the easy way to backup DVD's, but on the other hand it dosen't give you 'Hands on experience' as one might say, so you always have to rely on other people who have learn't the harder ways. What 2COOL replied with did not work. No display came up...Now, I don't know if this matters but all I have is the MOVIE ONLY files. The menus etc are stripped, so do you need menus to display things like this?
If so, sorry I didn't mention it to start with.

You mean on your DVD player's display? Of course not, you would have to read the Provider Id using a ASCII editor/reader. Just out of curiousity, if you just want to say it's yours, why don't you get an fine tip engraver and write on the DVD hub (plastic center)?

@2COOL - I didn't know that could be done, thought I'd have to translate to ascii myself.
Well, I learned something today - I can rest now.

ultra-fine sharpie's work as well, but stay in the HUB.

Is that to say that writing on the actual DVD with a sharpie is "bad"? I do this all the time (prior to putting on a label).

I just never thought it was a very good idea, something I carried over from CDRs. On a CDR the chemicals in the ink can disolve the reflective layer, but DVDs don't expose that layer to the air.
I write on the surface only if it has been printed on, that's a good sign that the disk won't be affected by ink. Otherwise I stick to the hub, very safe.
