Video too dark with all codecs in XMPEG? What to do?

Ever since installing the DivX 4.12 codec, video motion has gotten better, but now videos are all darker than original VOB file, no matter what codec used. I would like to continue with DivX 4.12 as the encoder, but how do I increase the brightness before encoding in XMPEG?
