Probs with Clint Eastwood HD-DVDs!!
Hi Guys and Gals...
First off, great forums... Ive been lurking around them for a while now, getting great info! I've encountered a problem trying rip and re-encode 2 of my HD-DVDs (so I can watch them through VMC): They are 'The Unforgiven' & 'Letters from Iwo Jima' I've done all of my others without trouble (about 25 of them!) with the following process: 1. Remove protection with AnyDVD HD 2. Extract feature streams with Eac3to's HdBrStreamExtractor GUI (Video - MKV, Audio - AC3\FLAC & Chapters - TXT) 3. Remux with either MKV Merge - MKV or TsmuxeR - M2TS When I point Eac3to to the main movie feature files, it crashes, or comes up with nothing at all. The additional features show up when I select them, just not the movie... It's got me beat!! Other HD-DVD's work fine both before and after, and the movies play with PowerDVD fine from disk! If anyone can give me some help I'd really appreciate it!! |

Hi!
Try the following slightly different procedure at: http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?...83&postcount=1 Scroll about halfway down the page to the BOLD heading "HD-DVD"... |

Thanks a bunch for that... I'll give it a go when I get home.
Although I've found yesterday that I cannot even rip the disks to HDD with AnyDVD HD. It gets to about 50% and then errors. I'll try that process from the disk. |

Heehehe... No problems!!!
Only the Letters from Iwo Jima is dual format, Unforgiven is straight HD-DVD. I had had the same thought myself with 'letters', but when I direct HdBrStreamExtractor to find the files they are in the /HDDVD_TS/ folder, the same as the other HD-DVDs. Then it shows all the different streams: Main Movie, and the extras, and when I hold the mouse over the main movie stream it shows 1080p vid and audio (whatever it is, can't remember!), but when I try to retrieve the individual streams from the main movie, it doesn't work at all, it also does not work directly from Eac3to (with the Eac3tomoreGUI). Cheers. |

Okie Dokie, sorry about the delay, but I've been away and unable to muck around with this Rip!
I've tried a few different things, including the alternate method described in the post linked above, and still no joy!! I have narrowed the issue down though! If I demux and mux the first of the EVO's (PEVOB_1, if I recall) then I get half the movie done right. This is no matter whether I do it with EVOdemux, or via the methods I described in my first post. It's only when I try and Include the 2nd EVO (PEVOB_2) that the programs crash. EVOdemux and eac3to both straight crash, and tsMuxeR just says it cannot detect the stream type. I have alternately tried to Join the EVO's, without success. It has now really got me stumped, as these are the only 2 I've had trouble with, and the movies play fine from the Disk! If anyone can offer me any idea's I'd would be very grateful. Thanks |

1) Is the "PEVOB_2" filesize somewhyere near comparable to that of "PEVOB_1" (as it should be)? If not, look for another file of that approximate size. 2) And of course you're picking up "PEVOB_2.EVO" and not "PEVOB_2.MAP" (if any), right? ;>} |

Yeah, it's definitely the 2nd EVO file, it sounds like the drive is having trouble accessing when I direct any of the programs listed above to it. The first EVO is no problem.
I have the LG combo BR/HD-DVD drive (not burner), if that makes any difference. Once again, I'm not sure why it's only these 2 disks that I have a problem with. I've ripped all my other HD-DVD's without problem. Would appreciate any help anyone can offer!! Thanks, OFD |

I don't know if the following is pertinent to your problem but, the following review of "The Unforgiven" HD-DVD included an interesting observation:

OK PEOPLES!!!!!!
Just got home and plugged in my xbox 360 hd-dvd drive. Vista detected it and set it up no probs... I directed HdBrStreamextractor (eac3to GUI) to the HDDVD_TS folder and as we speak it is working it's magic!!! Now, why this won't work on my LG Combo drive, I've got no idea? It's the GGC-H20L model. Anyway setarip_old: thanks a bunch for your assistance! massive in the mail!!! Cheers, OFD |

BTW - Sounds like your LG Combo drive either needs a cleaning or is slowly beginning to fail. You might try running a DVD/CD cleaning disc on it. Maxell makes one that sells for about $10US... |

Yeah, I'll give it a clean, and see what happens.
Interesting point though, is that these were not the last 2 I've tried to rip. I tried and failed, and then moved on to others, which ended up making these two the last two. So other disks have been successfully ripped on my LG drive... I'm a little curious as to why that would be... I'm looking at buying 'Million Dollar Baby', so it'll be intersting to see if I encounter the same problem!!! Cheers, OFD |

Yeah, I really should start looking at Bluray disks now, but I seem to still be able to find great value HD-DVD's around the place (and there haven't been that many new movies i'd fork out $45 bucks for!). |
