Splitting up encoding with mencoder
Hi,
I was wondering if I can split up xvid conversion with mencoder? For example: MPEG2 -> AVI (xvid) Video has 10000 frames I want to be able to start 1 thread of mencoder to encode the first 5000 frames and simultaneously a second thread to encode the next 5000 frames. And the end I can join the 2 parts back together. If you wonder why I want to do this. I've been playing with the threads option and other speed-increasing options but I never can encode faster then 45fps during 1st pas and 60-70 fps during second pass. virtualdub can encode at 140-160fps on my icore5... Hope anyone can help me |

I'm afraid you can't do it with mencoder alone because
1) mencoder does not offer frame accurate seeking. 2) mencoder tends to add audio delay instead of padding, causing a headache when joining the AVIs. 3) mencoder's muxer is said to produce incorrect output with B-frames. |

one utility that works
I shot a lot of video with my digital camera and once used XVID4PSP to merge and compress. But there were terrible audio sync problems. While there very well may be free utilities out there, I started using an video merger and splitter from some company called Boilsoft and the merger works fine and I now combine the AVIs first before encoding. They also make a splitter that breaks down video into milliseconds instead of frames so it can be a pain to work with. I need both to rework the video that XVID4 messed up... to split the large files and figure out the audio sync delay I need for each segment. Then I recombine them in new ways for better indexing.
