Distorted audio when playing video files

WinXP SP3 and Realtek (ALC888) HD Audio integrated on asrock 4core1333-fullHD board.

When a video is playing sound is distorted. Maybe the best way to describe:it sounds as if somebody is talking in front of a cooling fan
I tried everything, updating drivers, bios, even compared to VLC results.
Also a youtube video acts the same so its not a codec problek.
On the other hand single audio files (winamp, windows sounds..) play fine.
Also an interesting fact: when using MPC with Haali render (usually i use VR9) all is fine.

I dont know what the problem could be.. Would be gratefull if someone could help.
Regards

Look for a setting in those players that "sound loud" called "Pre-Amplify AC3 by default 20db" ...

Alot of AC3 tracks come pre-amplified so this option no longer applies (but plenty of other AC3 tracks will still need it !) ...
