No - the best way is to leave it as is (original resolution). It will work EVEN without transcoding (but the size will be bigger) and it will take just few minutes to process the whole DVD without converting MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC.

Ah ok, that's good news, but thinking about the reason I was transcoding to mp4 was to reduce the size of the DVD without losing too much (if at all?) quality. If I'm going to transcode, would it make more sense to transcode to 720x576 ?

Yes, it will be much better not to resize it - leave it to 720x576. PS3 will do the upscale much better and you can get a really good quality with lower bitrate. Give it a try with bitrate of 1500kbps and profile "turbo". In fact (at least my PS3) there will be no upscale but PS3 will output 576p signal to the TV and no internal upscaling is done.

So tried with 720x576/turbo and at the same bitrate (900kbps) the quality isn't as good in PowerDVD9 than the 1280x720 version, it's blockier. Will play them on my PS3 to see if it's different. Will use USB sticks as renaming on an HD is not very convenient and slower.

And in the future, can you do something to have both of these ? I succeeded on having a fully functional menu and a new subtitle, but the bluray disk had only one big m2ts for the movie. I succeeded with something else, not multiavchd. |

There were some additional changes in Menu tab:
Trying to make room for the new options, you now have XMB separated from other menu styles, because there are a lot of options available only for XMB. Also two new checkboxes are added for XMB: 'Do not trim title names' and 'Do not show title names'. The later is an addition to 'do not show title thumbnails' so you now can have XMB with title names only (no extended info and no thumbnails) - much like a scrollable classic menu with or without chapters. Back after playing the AVCHDs in my PS3 and the 1280x720 is less blocky than the 720x576, maybe because my TV doesn't do a good job at upscaling and it doesn't show the resolution of the input, but you did say the PS3 didn't upsale AVCHDs.
Having said that the quality of the 1280x720 is not very good anyway, pretty far from the DVD, I suppose the 900kbps bitrate isn't good enough, will try the 1500kbps you suggested. |

Yes, Insane profile is not good for DVD/upscaling. Use either '1 pass' or '1 pass fast/turbo'... and with 1280x720 bitrate of 1500 is not good enough (it is ok for 720x576)... Use at least 3000-4000 for 1280x720.

Then that means the 64 bit isn't in the latest download listed on the multiAVCHD website link. That where I got the latest download link from. |

Hi deank,
I hope you could help me with this one: I am using a Panasonic SD-5 for a year now and for lack of processing power I never got to edit the footage. Just recently I got a new macbook pro and iMovie is fine for my AVCHD needs. Unfortunately, some of my archived files are naked .MTS files (without the original folder structure) - iMovie cannot identify those files. Enters multiAVCHD - After I searched all over the web I found your wonderful app and it seems to do the magic of authoring the files back to their original format. THE PROBLEM is that everything looks stretched somehow, more than 16:9 (everybody look fat...). I tried checking the "keep 16:9 aspect ration" but no good. Any suggestions? |
