Region Setting on Pioneer DVD116 drives

I'd like to know if there is way to prevent the drive from permanently regionalizing to a certain region.

I rip both Region 2 and region 1 discs. I believe I use smartripper for ripping DVDs.

I run PowerDVD and use DVDGenie or whatever it is called to Change the regions.

I heard that you can only change the region on the Pioneer drives a certain number of times before it locks itself in the hardware.

Is what I'm doing preventing this?

Go here to download a region-free firmware for the drive. This will prevent it from region-locking.
