How to extract mp4 burned as XCD?
Hi, PROs.
I know, I have, in all probability, done a stupid thing. I've burned an 798 MB mp4 file in a disc as XCD, and deleted the original file to free space. Now neither the movie in the disc runs with any player, nor I can extract the original file from the file on the CD, even after copying it on the HD. Thanks and Regards. |

1) Did you check sectors' EDC of XCD file? If sectors containing header (usually, a few sectors in beginning) have EDC failed then you must retry reading of XCD on different CD drives. 2) Did you try to use my RR tool during creating of XCD?

Hello, Mr bond.
In his XCD FAQ, Alex speaks about difficulty of extraction due to scratches/other reasons that make the header or the index of the file unreadable. I have tested my disc by attempting a disc-to-disc copy with Nero, and no i/o errors were reported. Of course, it is possible to have errors while bin-generating in the mode2cdmaker. AVI-Mux-Gui won't touch the file [probably it would work only with AVI or MKV]. XCDExtractor does extract, but the extracted file doesn't work. We'll see how the future shakes out. Thanks and regards. Hi, elic. I should probably have used your RR-tool. Pity that I didn't. By tha way, I could download only the .021-update, and the main 0.20 was unreachable. Just tell me this: does your program have a GUI or it is only commandline-based? I am not too comfortable with the commandline applications. Thanks. |

xcd2ogm input-xcd-file output-file (for attempt of restoration) or xcd2ogm input-xcd-file NUL (for diagnostic only). It prints a dot when every 16 megabytes is read succesfully, or sector number and its EDC mismatch for each corrupted sector. Quote:

Thanks, elic, for the xcd2ogm link. What's "Elicit Gingers" ?
Mr bond, I have the weirdest thing to report. I tried, after these few days of my silence, XCDextractor one more time, and this time it worked (!@?). What's happening? And there's this other thing that makes me believe my new DVD-Rewriter (hp dvd635d) may be already throwing hiccups. While watching my MacKenna's Gold, the video stopped at about 40% into the film. I guessed some read errors must have cropped up on storage. Next I've tried to decrypt it with the now-extinct venerable software, and it started showing i/o error at 82% (!). I tried to play the offending VOB (as judged by the Decrypter) directly from the disc with PowerDVD, without success - my computer hung up. After several futile attempts I restarted my computer and attempted to copy the offending files with the Decrypter in File Mode, and guess what? This the Decrypter did this time without batting an eyelid. So now I reattempted the decryption of the whole movie. It raced on to a breathless finish! Whats left then to do? Yes, I watched the whole movie then from the disc without incident. ...What the hell's happening? Thanks and regards. |

> I tried [...] XCDextractor one more time, and this time it worked (!@?). What's happening? Maybe your XCD disc has a lot of nearly-damaged sectors and some of them either readable either unreadable (it may depend on temperature of CD-reader or disc, on humidity, ...). In last attempt, you had a luck > it started showing i/o error [...] I restarted my computer [...] I watched the whole movie then from the disc without incident. Yes, IMHO it looks mostly as CD-reader overheating... [offtopic] > What's "Elicit Gingers" ? It's just collective nickname of me and my wife Many years ago, my friends caled me "Рыжик" (pronouncing "Ryzhyk") (not as "saffron milk-cap" mushroom, rather as kitten of saffron color or as Ginger from "Chicken Run"). And adjective "elicit" (sprung up as result of searching my current nick in English dictionary ) can be IMHO translated into Russian as "дотошный" (pronouncing "dotoshny") as "who cannot stop digging until find out every detail" (approximately "meticulous" in English). [/offtopic]
