Plotting csv files

Hi, I wondered whether there is any way to use AviSynth to plot a csv array?

I have a 3-column csv file, with the first two columns containing the x and y coordinates.

The third column contains the luminance values I would like to plot.

If not with AviSynth; are there any free photoshop-type programs that will do this?

I would be surprised if PhotoShop supported this; your request sounds more like a job for MS Excel, OO.org Calc or perhaps gnuplot...

well... some kind of avisynth filter (though would probably need to be developed) could do it...

but it would be more feasible to do it through one of the choices Leak mentioned,
with OO.org (OpenOffice) Calc and gnuplot being the free options.

OK first problem! I'm using Open Office Calc; but I can't figure out a way to plot the data in the way I wanted to (as described above).

N.B. I've now converted the csv file into an xls file for convenience.

Looks like it's gonna' take me forever to learn Gnuplot!
Could someone just tell me what command lines to type to achieve what I want?

Take a look at the ConditionalReader filter http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/ConditionalReader. It won't read .csv files directly, but it does provide a way to read the value of a variable from an external file for each frame. You might be able to combine that with <somefilter> that overlays the relevant data on your video.
