VFW missing from ffdshow when installing on Windows 8

I use Smooth Video Project which requires VFW for it to work properly.

I just installed Windows 8 Pro x64 and was trying to install ffdshow_rev4504_20130312_clsid but I noticed that the VFW is missing from the installation options.

What the heck, how do I get VFW to install?

Thanks

That's strange, I just checked and I do have ffdshow's VFW part installed (Windows 8 64, naturally I installed 32bit ffdshow). It is accessible from Virtualdub too.

CLSID build 4504 of FFDShow doesn't install VFW on Windows 8, not even sure if it has it at all. If you want VFW on Windows 8, use build 4503 instead.

You, like many people including myself, probably only need the VFW part to be installed for the YV12 decoder.

My builds are fine. Same would have happened with any other build for that specific revision. The bug has been corrected in r4507.

SVP doesn't use the VFW component afaik. It uses the DirectShow decoder (or the video processor).

@burfadel
If you only need a YV12 decoder, then you could also use the Xvid VFW codec or the Helix YV12 codec.

I'd try the official SourceForge project site:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffds...eric%20builds/

Not in the x64 build, I fear.
Just tried your rev4513, rev4507, rev4504 and rev4499 (all x64) and VFW only appears in rev4499.

And while VFW x64 works in rev4499, the "Configure" start menu shortcut strangely does not (C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\system32\ff_vfw.dll",configureVFW). It doesn't display the config dialog for some reason. But it works from VirtualDub x64.

It is intentionally disabled in x64 Windows 8 because it does not work properly. It crashed sometimes last time I tested.

The 32-bit version works fine, so you can use that instead.

Thanks folks, this thread helped me with the same problem.
Just posting this because I chose a different workaround.
Honestly, I am confused how x64-Windows, x64- or x86-ffdshow and x86-AviSynth interact. Please, if my decision was stupid, don't blame me, but explain why.

In order to get HuffYuv working under Win8.1 x64, I installed ffdshowTryouts rev4500 x86, but with a right click 'compatibility problems' and then chose the option 'worked under Win7'. That way, I got the VFW part and was able to activate its HuffYuv decoder. AvsPmod is now able to display the clip.

You should not run it in compatibility mode. Simply get the latest version (r4525) and it will work properly on Win8.

Both 32bit and 64bit installers for rev4525 don't allow VFW installation in Win 8.1 x64...

Will that change in the future, or are we stuck using compatibility mode in order to install the VFW module?

Sorry to bump this old thread, but there is a fix for 64-bit VFW under Windows 8.1 x64?
