whats more wered is that its only doing it with VEGA and 5700 cards, but maybe not for everyone either, i've tried several different versions of MADVR back to .14, nothing changes.
I'll maybe have another play tonight,

I set madvr to output 10 bit color to my JVC RS600 and utilize DX11 Full Screen Exclusive mode to achieve this. I'm noticing that about 50% of the time, it is using DX11 Windowed mode instead, limiting output to 8 bit color. I turned on debugging and discovered that the culprit was the Application Frame Host service. After killing this service in Task Manager, DX11 Full Screen Exclusive mode (10 bit) worked. The computer is dedicated to HTPC usage with Kodi Dsplayer w/ madvr. The only applications that start on boot are the Nvidia display panel and software to start Kodi with a short delay. I have two questions:
1) Will madvr automatically output at 8 bit if DX11 Windowed mode is used? I want to ensure that the GPU isn't dithering the 10 bit output to 8 bit, which would clearly be worse than madvr doing the dithering. 2) What can I do to prevent the Application Frame Host service from interfering with DX11 FSE mode? It's a Windows service and I see no way to disable it in the list of services. Last edited by jasonwc18; 9th December 2019 at 16:16. |

quick question with mad vr up scaling either chroma, picture, or luma have a very slight ghosting effect. only view able in fast scenes? similar to if the frame rate wasnt matching or low? tried all sorts of settings even custom resolution with framerate at 23.976 in control panel. Cant work out if its madvr mpc hc or just the video being upscaled.

to be clear about this HDR issue with 5700 navi cards, ive tried much older version of MADVR that worked fine on my RX580 and saw the same issue, its defo an issue with this card, what I dont understand is what is different in QBhd's setup.

ive created an SDR comparison of roughly what i'm seeing when I compare ATI HDR vs Windows HDR, even though this is SDR the colour difference it fairly close.

as there is no way to use MADVR HDR tone mapping and having this sent to the display without using the AMD API i've configured one of my profiles to balance out the lack of saturation, however I also found there is more to this issue than a lack of saturation as simply turning the saturation up does not correct the colour issues, there is a shed load magenta and blue missing so blood red colours were orange. I corrected this by eye and i'm now happy with this results for a decent workaround, I didnt like the results I got from the windows HDR + madvr alone.
obvioulsy calibrated colour purists out there would cringe at this but to my eye it looks spot on now. I'll test at the weekend on my Samsung HDR TV to see if there is any difference and maybe also put my 580 back in just so we defo know it is an issue with the card and not my processing chain in some way.

I still have a problem with black flickering when using madVR's "switch to matching display mode" with HDR content. FSE is off.
I have a little more information on the issue. It seems that with HDR videos only, when I go fullscreen, madVR acts like it's changing the refresh rate to match the movie (screen goes black for a moment), but when it comes back, it's still at 60Hz, and injecting black frames between each of the video's frames (at an inconsistent rate, due to the non-conformity of 24Hz vs 60Hz). For any non-HDR 24Hz video, madVR successfully changes the refresh rate to 23.976. Edit: While I'm here... Does anyone know what I have to do to ensure madVR will force 10-bit color when it goes to 24fps when I fullscreen it? As it happens, Nvidia's control panel, with the latest drivers (or any drivers, apparently) doesn't let me choose 10 bpc. Only 8 or 12, the latter of which my display can't even handle. So if people are easily enjoying 10-bit color with madVR, I've clearly missed something simple and need to have my hand held on this. I can tell from test patterns that madVR is currently sticking with 8-bit color when it goes fullscreen. Edit2: After more fiddling around, I determined that the only circumstance under which 10-bit color is available to select with Nvidia is when I am specifically outputting YCbCr422. I can't even pick YCbCr444 when the refresh rate is 24; the card refuses. This seems to be a problem, for as far as I know, madVR doesn't quite have the configurability to tell the PC to "use YCbCr422 10-bit 24Hz when fullscreen, and return back to RGB 8-bit 60Hz otherwise". Could be mistaken. A workaround would be welcome. Last edited by Asterra; 10th December 2019 at 07:50. |

@mclingo
As I said the first time I saw this, I think that desaturation corresponds to the lack of conversion to Rec.709 or DCI-P3. I posted a shader here to do that conversion, try it and let me know what you think. The shader doesn't do gamut mapping so this should ideally be done with a DisplayCAL 3DLUT, but you need madVR v0.92.16 for it. |

I missed this conversation, i'll have a look tonight, if this is the case why is it not affecting eveyone with 5700's do you think? Do we need to ask MADSHI to deploy something in MADVR for this?

I did ask but didnt get a reply as yet, QBhd maybe off piste right now, we could do with:
Windows Version AMD driver Version MADVR version + HDR version LAV version Media player used HDMI port used on TV and type (bluray/PC etc)

From the descriptions, if it's only happening with 5700s then it's an AMD card or driver issue rather than a general madVR issue.
There's a dedicated thread for specific GPUs/driver issues with madVR: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=176013Same, those questions would be better answered in that driver thread. A recurrent one with Nvidia that is becoming quite tiring is the "is it possible to also switch bit-depth output when switching refresh rates?" that seems to come up every few pages.
