DVD95Copy Movie With Chapter Menu as Default Main Menu

Sometimes people who want to have a movie-only DVD also want to keep their menus. No problem about that. I feel the same way too. The only menu that is worth keeping is our Chapter Selection Menu as we want the power to jump to any chapter and also know what the Chapter’s title is about. Here’s how I do it.

Tools I used
IFOedit 0.95
DVD95Copy 1.1 or later (Full version)

1. Click on link below and follow my other guide to get your DVD95Copy movie only.

How To Do a Movie-Only DVD using DVD95Copy

The only difference now is to include your movie’s VTS_*_0.VOB. in Step 3 or 5. The VOB contains your menus.

2. Making Your Chapter Menu as your Main/Root Menu

By now, you should know what your movie’s Title and Title Set Number (VTS_*) is. So, let’s go to your movie’s Title Set IFO / VTS OverView / Menu Language Unit.

At all times, your “Menu 1” will be displaying [Root-Menu]. This is a mandatory specification. Hopefully, your movie has your other menus, not necessarily in order, like in our example #1 below. If not, in example #2, you’ll normally see this.

Example #1

Language Menu Unit 1: [ ]
....Menu 1: [Root-Menu].............(entry PGC)
....Menu 2: [Sub-picture Menu]......(entry PGC)
....Menu 3: [Audio Menu]............(entry PGC)
....Menu 4: [Chapter (PTT) Menu]....(entry PGC)
....Menu 5: [Angle Menu]............(entry PGC)

Example #2

Language Menu Unit 1: [English]
....Menu 1: [Root-Menu] (entry PGC)
....Menu 2: [entry only]
....Menu 3: [entry only]
....Menu 4: [entry only]

3. Choose which applies to your Menu Language Unit configuration.

If [Chapter (PTT) Menu] exists, then go to next step (Step 7).
If it does not, then it resides in one of your remaining menus associated with a [entry only]. Go to Step 4.

4. Locating your Chapter Selection Menus

Since you don’t have a [Chapter (PTT) Menu] present, we have to look for it. In your movie’s IFO / VTS Overview / Menu Language Unit section, view only your menus that have (uses VOB-Ids: #) on the same line. You can do that by double-left clicking on the menu line and your VOB Preview window will hopefully present you what that VOB-ID contains. In my example below, my chapter menus reside in PGC-Menu 2.

If you find that you are not be able to view the VOB-ID video segment, there are two alternatives you can use, DVD2AVI and Vobrator. These are freewares that are available on Doom9’s download section. By preference, DVD2AVI would be my next choice.

Most of the time, viewing in IFOedit works. What you need to do first if you are not experienced enough to know what your menus look like, play your DVD and try to remember or write down the description of your menus. In our case, our first page of our Chapter Menu is easy to identify.

Language Menu Unit 1: [ ]
Menu 1: [Root-Menu].........(entry PGC)..(Programs: 1) (Cells: 1) (uses VOB-IDs: 1)
Menu 2: [entry only].....................(Programs: 5) (Cells: 5) (uses VOB-IDs: 2) Chapter Scene Menus
Menu 3: [entry only].....................(Programs: 2) (Cells: 2) (uses VOB-IDs: 3)
Menu 4: [entry only].....................(Programs: 0) (Cells: 0)
Menu 5: [entry only].....................(Programs: 0) (Cells: 0)
Menu 6: [entry only].....................(Programs: 9) (Cells: 9) (uses VOB-IDs: 4)
Menu 7: [entry only].....................(Programs: 0) (Cells: 0)
Menu 8: [entry only].....................(Programs: 0) (Cells: 0)

Note: Some DVDs may an intro transition clip to your Chapter Menu first page.

5. Making your Chapter Selection Menu as Main Menu upon DVD insert

Now that you know which PGC-Menu contains your Chapter Selection menus, go to your movie’s IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_1 (Root Menu). Note: All Video Title Set (VTS) PGC-menu commands located in Language Menu Unit sections, will be found in your VTS_*_0.IFO / VTSM_PGCI_UT directory.

Using our example PGC-Menu 2 from previous step, edit your first pre-command as follows. Right-click and select (LinkPGCN) Link PGC. Enter a “2” for your PGC Nr.

1.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 2 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 02 ]

Translation of edit: When PGC-Menu_1 (Root-Menu) is accessed, its first pre-command will execute. It will immediately make a navigation jump to your Chapter Menu which is PGC-Menu 2.

6. Save IFO

7. Jumping to Root Menu Upon DVD Insert

Right now, after doing step 1, you already have your movie playing first. If you decided to keep it that way then you can skip this step and go to step 9. You can access your Chapter Selection Menu by pressing your Menu button on your DVD remote. If you want your Chapter Selection Menu displaying first before your movie then here’s how to do it.

Go to your VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_MAT / First Play PGC / PGC Command Table. Right-click on your first Pre Command line and select “Edit Command”. Select (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts). Input your Title Nr and Titleset Nr. of your movie.

Now for Menu: field. If you had a Chapter (PTT) Menu present in Step 2 then select “chapter” in drop-down menu.
If you didn’t have one, then select “root”. Press OK and you should one of the examples below.

1.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, chapter-menu

or

1.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, root-menu

8. Save VIDEO_TS.IFO

9. Return to Chapter Selection Menu When Movie Ends

When you did step 1, you zeroed out all your Pre-Post-Cell commands. But now, since you are keeping a menu, we need to have a post command so that when your movie ends, it returns back to its root menu.

Go to your / VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_1 / PGC Command Table. Guess what? You don’t have one and you should have this in place “There is no PGC Command Table”. We need to add a post command. Simple. Right click on “There is no PGC Command Table” and select “Add PostCommand”.

You will be presented with a new Post Command #1 with a “NOP”. Right-click on Post Command #1 and select “Edit Command”. Select “(CallSS_VTSM) Call Titleset Menu”. For Menu:, select Root and for Resume Cell:, select “1”. Look at example below.

OLD > 1.Post Command.....NOP.....................................................[00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ]
NEW > 1.Post Command....(CallSS VTSM) Call TitleSet root-menu [Resume Cell: 1]...[30 08 00 00 01 83 00 00 ]

________________________________________
10. In order for your DVD remote to access your root menu, your “Menu Call – Root” option must be unchecked in your movie’s IFO / VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_1 / Prohibited users operations. Double click on “Prohibited users Operations” and ensure it’s unchecked.

Have these options unchecked:
  • X Menu Call - Title
    _ Menu Call - Root
    X Menu Call - Subpicture
    X Menu Call - Audio
    X Menu Call - Angle
    X Menu Call – PTT

11. **OPTIONAL** Accessing Audio and Subtitle Menus

If you want to access your Audio and Subtitle Menus then here's how to do it.

While you're still in VTS_PGC_1, scroll up to “Prohibited users operations”. Click on that and you will have your Prohibited User operations options window pop up.

Have these options unchecked:
  • X Menu Call - Title
    _ Menu Call - Root
    _ Menu Call - Subpicture
    _ Menu Call - Audio
    X Menu Call - Angle
    X Menu Call – PTT

12. Save VTS_01_0.IFO

13. Get VTS Sectors
