laptop cd drive problem

Sorry if this is the wrong place to talk about my problem

I have a laptop. The cd drive works fine (it can read cd's). However I think the "spring" or some componenet of the drive is damaged because I have a lot of trouble in closing and opennign the drive (it can be done but requires the use of force ). Any ideas on how I can fix it? Thanks

Force

Most laptop CD drives require you to support the drive when inserting a CD, that is, one hand clicking the CD onto the spindle, the other underneath the platter holder support it. Otherwise, the rails that hold the platter bend, and the drive never closes properly and eventually fails to spin CDs or starts scratching them. I doubt it can be fixed, although it can be replaced at an exorbitant price (at least this is true for most manufacturers). If it works, support the drive when inserting a CD so that the problem doesn't get worse. This is probably in the fine print of the manual, but not in the quickstart guide.

I would agree with preston's diagnosis ... but it may be rather inexpensive to get a replacement drive. Generic notebooks usually use a standardized format for the optical drive, and you can get a nice Toshiba 16-10-40x cd-r/8x dvd combo drive for as little as 160$/€.
If your nick refers to your brand of notebook (i.e. you have some type of Taiwanese OEM notebook mfg'd by Clevo or similar companies), get the repair manual for it and check the type of optical drive that is specified. Good luck!
