flat colors
I'm having a weird issue with flat colors, and wondering if someone can help. I'm using Asmodian max settings, a tuned 1080TI, a Samsung chg90. The colors seem noticeably flatter than VLC, the preview pane, and even an iphone. Here's the same clip in vlc, the windows preview pane, and mpc. And OSD

it's by far the best scaler for the type of content it is added for.
if you want to try it madVR can do for like ever. it's currently removed from the option but you can still find an option to use it with a hot key. it's "nearest neighbor". |

Edit: It is hidden for image upscaling as huhn mentioned, but you can still see it under chroma upscaling or downscaling.

What a pity that madVR can't be used with old games!
Diablo 1 doubling Nearest Neigthbor vs Bilinear vs NGU AA High vs NGU Sharp High (Source).

An Envy might have more uses than simply video playback. A customizable hardware scaler for putting NGU AA (or Sharp, if you prefer) between a NES and the TV would be pretty cool.
Edit: of course, it will probably add at least one frame of input lag so it may not be a great option.

Also... it's not as if movies are more expensive than videogames. Quite the opposite is true and has been for a very long time. |

You should check out the Envy thread on AVS Forum. They've discussed the *POTENTIAL* price range for Envy "quite a bit".
My comment was very much sarcastic on cost. However, presumably you have a lot more videos than games, potentially. Buying the Envy to upscale a few old video games probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense especially given it's not really designed around that use case. It iS, however, designed around video from many different sources. I'm not saying you COULDN'T use the Envy for this, but, it's probably a bit overkill.

Does anyone already know if "Filmmaker Mode" (https://www.experienceuhd.com/filmmakermode) is something that could help us with madVR once the TVs support it? E.g. is it additional data in the video stream or "just" a new picture mode?

we already have something like that it's content type with can in theory at least be used with HDMI.
it's pretty much not used at all and a new version of this will take years to spread enough and the next problem we don't even know if it is possible to change that on the fly. in theory i could be used in the future but for now it's just a marketing gag to boost sales we don't even know hard hard TV producer have to follow it to add it and what exactly it will do in the end. and if you really really care you will calibrate your screen anyway which is far better then this new "feature" will ever be. |
