Question about crf and compare
Another question about crf.
If i encode the same video with the exact same parameters, but once in 8bit and another in 10bit. Is it again a stupid idea to compare, or do i have in both cases a video with the same quality ? My purpose it to try to see in what cases of video 10bit can be realy usefull, and in what cases it will just bloat the video file without realy any interest. |

I assume they didn't are not the same size, it is only useful to compare files of the same size when determining the benefit of a particular setting.

Quantizer ranges are not even the same between 8-Bit and 10-Bit.
My suggestion would be as follows: Encode the video in 8-Bit with CRF mode and find the a CRF value where the quality becomes insufficient (but not totally horrible). Now, remember the resulting average bitrate and encode the same video in 10-Bit with 2-Pass mode and otherwise identical parameters, using exactly that target (average) bitrate. Finally compare the results visually.
