One thing related to this that i find rather stupid is that all the forks of VSFilter don't change the name and CLSID of their filters, which results in MPC-HC thinking this is vanilla VSFilter, which has the exact same features as the ISR, and deserves to be blocked. If the xy-VSFilter people would just change the CLSID of the filter (and possibly the same to include xy as well, for good measure), this wouldn't even happen. Additionally, i have no clue why you would want the ISR for some subtitles but not for others (or vice versa). TL;DR: Ask the xy-VSFilter developers to change the CLSID of their filter, so it doesn't collide with vanilla VSFilter anymore.

But using different renderers for external/embedded subs is just silly.

The main reason why xy-VSFilter has maintained the original CLSID, is to maintain drop-in compatibility with any existing third-part applications or codecs which either manually load or contain workarounds for VSFilter.dll
IMHO, blocking VSFilter.dll in MPC-HC when the ISR is enabled is the correct behavior to have, otherwise you risk problem like the ISR rendering subtitles on top of VSFilter.dll rendering and killing performance. Unfortunately there is a lot of bad advice on the internet, and anybody who sets the non-autoloading version "DirectVobSub" to prefer in MPC-HC will cause both ISR and VSFilter to render subtitles at the same time, even in the current version I tested 1.6.6.6899. This is by far the most common issue I've seen people run into when they attempt to migrate from using the MPC-HC ISR to VSFilter.dll. If MPC-HC really does have a hidden "BlockVSFilter" key in the registry, in many ways I would like if it would also block would also cover "DirectVobSub" set to prefer in the external filters when the ISR is enabled, like it already does for the auto-loading version. This would have a large benefit of fixing what I suspect are a large number of semi-broken MPC-HC subtitle setups in the wild. The users who require this specific behavior would still be able to enable it by disabling the hidden BlockVSFilter registry key. On the other side, it can also still confusing to many users that the poorly labeled "Auto-load subtitles" setting in MPC-HC control is really an "Enable MPC-HC ISR subtitle auto-loading / Disable VSFilter" toggle. I would normally suggest adding informative tooltips, but that would likely confuse users even more. At some point the entire subtitle settings dialog likely needs to be redesigned to more gracefully control whether the internal or potentially one of multiple external subtitle renderers is allowed to load. This entire situation is just going to get more complex once xy_sub_filter using the new subtitle interface is released, with only madVR initially supporting it. I think it could be useful to have the ability to display more than one subtitles on screen (AFAIK currently this is only possible using two different subtitle renderers, right?).
For example if you are using a teaching video you can have to the original language subtitles and ones in your native language position at a different place on the screen. This way the viewer can hear and see the original language and at the same time see the translation. I'm not saying that this is a common usage but it has practical benefits so why remove it?
