Backing Up Double Sided DVD - Muxing Probs After Creation of First *.Cif

G'Day,

DVD2SVCD version: 1.0.4 build 2
Title: The Pelican Brief
system: PAL
Region: 4 <DVD-ROM Is Region Free>
What is the Problem: i-Author creates 1 x *.Cif then error problem
Why you think it doesn't work: I'm expecting a further 2 x *.Cif's
If you solved it how.....: Hopefully I can come back and advise...

I ripped 5 x *.Vob's from Side A then 3 x *.Vob's from Side B with smartripper. The 22HR rip progressed right towards the end.

My MUX Problem is indicated with a quick flash in the MPG2mps dialogue box.

Then DVD2SVCD Position 57 The process cannot acces the file because it is being used by another process - <I clicked Ok>

I have tried this twice in crash recovery and unable to progress beyond this point, the second time around I checked the 'Don't delete any files'. Therefore, I am showing 3 x mp2 & 3 x mpv files but only 1 x Cif.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

"First time over" errors are subtitle related. dvd2svcd will try to fix them (as it says in the log), if you want or have to do it manually, open the offending subtitle list file (en1-2.txt in your case) and delete the lines referring to the first subtitle ... you will lose that subtitle, but your muxing problem might be solved.
Then, start mpg2mps manually and do the muxing ... and authoring afterwards.

I've noticed that, in addition to having subtitles before the 4-second mark, having too high a combined bitrate can cause the 'first time over' message.

You didn't post enough of the log file for us to tell what your audio and video bitrates are. I only bring it up because the automated fix the DVD2SVCD attempts doesn't appear to be working in your case.

If deleting the first 20 seconds or so of subtitles doesn't fix the 'first time over' error, try muxing with just one audio stream. If that succeeds, you'll either need to reduce one (or both) of your audio stream bitrates or your max video bitrate.

G'Day from down under....

Thanks to both smiller667 & Kedirekin for your responses, in fact a very BIG Thank you.

smiller667 I deleted just the first line, then Kedirekin I deleted the first 30 seconds of the OGT file en1-2.txt and still no joy.

I was able to Mux (Multiplexor) in i-Author without the subtitles in bbMPEG_Muxed File01.mpv ok.

But with the OGT Active and the en1-2.txt inserted receive the following:

I was thinking that may be I should only have three of these files and that one of these may have to be appended to the other. But which one? I have copied the first and last seconds from each of the four text files:

Did you notice how text file en1-2.txt, is missing the DVD2SVCD Header *******IAUTHOR OGT CREATED BY DVD2SVCD******* yet the other three files 1,3 & 4 have it.

Oh yes, am I correct in assuming that I'm only using the one audio stream?

I would really like to get this one solved if I can and once again certainly appreciate any help.

kindest regards

what about the new version of dvd2svcd without Iauthor support? Give it a try.

To use the new version and avoid another 24 hours of video encoding, do the following:

1) start the process using the new version with all settings that you want. Use a new folder to output files;
2) few seconds after the begin of CCE work, cancel CCE. Let DVD2SVCD working. It will probably crash at muxing step;
3) copy the old - and already encoded - *.mpv file generated by CCE in this new folder of work;
4) use crash recovery to restart from the step that goes after "video encoding" - probably "muxing and cutting".

Mozart's suggestion is a good one.

As for the errors with the version you've been using, I think your bitrate is too high (video max 2498, audio 224). You should lower the max combined bitrate by 40-50 kbps for each subtitle stream you intend to include.

The fact that you're getting a hard crash (page fault) instead of the '1st time over' error is pretty disturbing though.

I you feel like trying it, you could re-encode your audio to, say, 128 kbps and remuxing. 160 kbps might be low enough too, but I'd try 128 first That should free up bitrate so that iAuthor will accept it (though again, you are getting hard crashes, so I really just don't know).

Oh, and one possible reason that en1-2.txt is missing the DVD2SVCD header is that DVD2SVCD tried to 'repair' it, which probably means summarily deleting everything before the second subtitle entry.

I guess we are seeing severyl problems here ... first, subtitles were split incorrectly for a total of 3 discs.
Second, as Kedirekin pointed out, your bitrate is very close to the max ... and you should calculate roughly 50k per subtitle track added. That's why you get the first time over error ...
Then, dvd2svcd tries to fix it by removing the first sub(s) ... this often helps in critical situations. It apparently removed the "header" & incorrectly failed to remove one line (as already pointed out by Kedirekin) ... you might want to add that header line and remove the

************ Page #506 Finished***************

from the en1-2.txt. This line and/or the lack of the header might cause the crash in the muxer ...
Mozart's suggestion is probably the best way to go ...

G'Day!

Well do I feel real stupid... I took part of Mozart's advice in that I chose to go along with the same build instead of installing the new version. I did this because I have had no problems at all with some nine DVD's during the past month. Starting from the beginning I found that my problems may well have been an operator error, as only 1415 subtitle *.bmp's were created this time around, instead of 1522 *.bmp's which were created from the original process.

Where did I go wrong? I believe that I may have had smartripper fool DVD2SVCD program on side 'B' by adding an extra *.vob file in the ripping process. How I found this out was I let DVD2SVCD rip side 'B' first. It only ripped three files, where as smartripper ripped all four *.vob's. I stopped DVD2SVCD and renamed the *.vob's 5,6 & 7. I then proceeded in letting DVD2SVCD rip side 'A' It ripped only four of the five *.vob's. I stopped the DVD2SVCD program once more.

Recommencing a fresh process showed some 110 subtitle *.bmp's less, which leads me to believe that the first *.vob was ignored from side 'A' but may not have been ignored from side 'B'.

Therefore, in conclusion and rather than waste anyone elses time, I've decided to go along with the entire encoding process all over again. Special thanks to Mozart, Kedirekin and smiller667 for your suggestions. Yes, I will pay you all the courtesy in letting you know how I went with this project in say, a day or two.

Edit: Ok the whole process has long completed. Not a setting was changed due to the fact, that I was pleased with some seven previous backups with those settings in version 1.0.4 build 2 . Therefore, vStrip was able to rip the correct *.vob's.

The acid test is my standalone, it play's the movies perfectly together with subtitles. Thanks for everyone's help.

Cheers
