playback screensize in plain english

i have ripped a couple of dvd's (for my own use of course) and the whole package has worked perfectly .... but..... apartfrom the cce logo , the letter box (widescreen) effect is DAMMED ANOYING.So what can i do (if anything) during the extraction process to resize the the outputted svcd files to playback in a larger size. I can accept a slight loss of pix on the sides for a higher, fuller screen fill of my standard TV. It doesnt have external height adjustments like in the old days..... any suggestions ie setup or alternatenative playback progs. tv out card is Geforce2/mx400 amd ASUSDVD for playback.
