a/v delay: smartripper vs. dvd2avi
follwoing prob:
when ripping the dvd, sr tells me that there is no av delay. when extracting the ac3-streams from the vobs using dvd2avi, it tells me that there is a delay... i experienced this with several movies now... any ideas? whom can i trust?

I'd go by what dvd2avi tells you.. never had any problems with it so far.
and a delay of -110ms can be heard.. the limit is somewhere around 50/60ms

To DSPguru:
I want to use your BeSweet to convert sound directly from VOBs to MP3. Before that I used to extract AC3 file with DVD2AVI and then convert it to MP3 with BeSweet. The question is how will I know wheather there is a delay and how big is it with this VOBs->MP3 approach ? Thank's in advance. |

BeSweet has nothing to do with the AV delay. You have to enter this value in NanDub when you are muxing the video with the audio (Audio > Interleaving... > Audio skew correction). Personally, I cannot care less about that setting (always use the default 0 ms), since I can never notice any difference (mp3 is CBR, don't know if this is true for VBR, too).

hell, that's a question... let' get it on... i think it's more an amalgamation of seeing, hearing AND believing. btw. let's imagine that some persons personal 'audio processing' (->hearing) is much slower than their 'video processing'(->seeing), which would result in a 'everything out of synch'. this would give you problems, i mean try to give your girlfriend a delay... ;-7

@Rumata
in future versions of BeSweet i will be using vStrip instead of bbDMUX, and would be able to extract the delay. btw, anyone tried to worked with the new switch ? Code:
-ota( -d delay ) maybe a new feature should be added to dvd-players : "set your personal A/V delay"

@chi, Nobody with a healthy brain (->decoder) has a Personal A/V delay. However, if you are 40 meters far from the speakerphone, you can hear a delay of almost 120ms even if the movie have no async. Last edited by Mozart; 7th January 2002 at 16:15. |

ohhh. You are right. Guess I should say "healthy PRIMITIVE brain", just because those functions are older, in evolutive scale of time, than these others usualy corrupted. Thus, they are more safe. As a usual rule for brain evolution: older functions - like sexual desire, equilibrium, hearing... - are strongger than new ones - ethics, etc. lol.

mhhhh...
let's imagine a prehistoric, dvd-ripping society...that would would be great. no posts about delayed audio, flask issues, over-/undersized avi's or worries about copyright violations. the only problem would be sneak-attacking sabre-tooth-tigers... ;-7
