What's a good CPU to go with?

Hey, I'm building a new HTPC and was just wondering what CPU anyone would suggest to use since this is the most resource intense task the machine will be doing. No games, strictly BD ripping, encoding and playback. I'd like to stay under $500 and preferably $200-$300. I should state it's for BDRebuilder, I rarely mess with DVD's anymore

You're going to be asked to change your title: Asking "what's best" is frowned upon pretty heavily, since "best" is a subjective concept that more often than not results in flame wars. Makes big headaches for the moderators.

That said, I can offer suggestions based off of my own HTPC usage. Since big processors with high encoding demands results in having to have some way to keep things cool, I opted to go with two machines. The first is a video encoding/media server. I encode everything to it, and store it on hard drives that are shared with my home network. This way, I can watch a movie on my laptop from out of our library without disturbing anyone in the living room. Since this computer isn't located anywhere where people want to watch movies, it can be as loud as it needs to be. Let the fans roar! The HTPC is a very low power (an ancient AMD 5050e processor that has done our money proud) unit that does have some files stored locally, but also gets service from our server. Low power means easier to cool, and easier to cool means quiet. Plus I'm free to upgrade components in the encoding computer without having to dismantle the home entertainment system.

How often would you be encoding blu-rays?

Don't listen to the suggestion for an i7-3770K, that's a complete waste for what you need it for, and even in the best situations its really no much better than an i5-3570K.

If you're just doing the occasional blu-ray rip, the AMD A8-3870K would be a good choice. If you can wait for a little while, the A10-5800K an even better one. Now, people will argue they aren't that good for encoding, and that may be true, but they are cost effective, and are ideal for HTPC use. I would stay clear of i3's, they're crap. Intel fanboi's will disagree, many of them forgetting they're 2 core (so at best, half as good as an i5), and the fact that its not really coupled with the best GPU capabilities. The AMD APU's will save the need to buy a discrete GPU, and the boards can be bought at a good price. At least unlike Intel who cheaped out, they come with 6 SATA3 ports (8 on the upcoming chipset) which is much better than Intel's 2. I hate the fact that when I upgrade shortly, I will have to pay for a board that has to resort to using a third party chip for extra SATA3 ports, adding to the cost of the thing.

Why Intel you ask if I just recommended an AMD APU? I'm not a fanboi of either, I recommend the best of what I see fits a situation. Since I want to do heavy video encoding, gaming, and multi-use the system, an i5-3570K represents a better option for me.

Well, here's the full story I was so angry this evening I had in mind just assembling a new system, but I should at least TRY to fix this one. Also, at the very least, I'm hoping to get opinions on if I should salvage any and which parts? the PSU was purchased in 2006 and so was the case. The rest of the system is much newer of course.

Recently started getting bluescreens and not sure were to start looking for problem. I think I've ruled out overtemp, although I HAVE caused the system to bluescreen about 5 times on overtemp before getting the Zalman cooler. Now the system hangs ONLY with CPU at full load. NO Overclocking whatsoever, all stock speeds.

Right now I have it out of entertainment center and running with cover off and it seems stable? But I still suspect overtemp is not the problem. The reason I suspect this is: The last two system freezes I was watching the core temps(with Core Temp) and they were very low(48degC) the display just went blank(no bluscreen)then reset itself. Upon startup it said "Windows has recovered from a Serious Error" and "Bluescreen" was in the Details pulldown.

Where to start troubleshooting?

you are really sure not to overheating?
Lascala is a nice HTPC case, but you are using a 1xx Watt CPU in it and use it at full load.
Testing it for only a few minutes isn't enough.
Case can overheat in a longer time.
Maybe CPU is fine, but other components can heat up too when hot air can't come out of case quick enough.

Just tap in what information you gave into this PSU calulator I've used in the past and assuming you have a standard DVD-RW as well your PSU is barely managing

According to the calculator your PSU is running at 273W average load with 85% CPU load, so running at 95% takes it to 284w which is really pushing your 330w PSU. If you take that the PSU is running at 85% the vast majority of the time its running at 280w, so your PSU is already struggling when the CPU is running at 99% load, which is possible one reason for the blue screen. The PSU simply can't provide enough continuous power without it overheating and starting to shut down, hence blue screen

No PSU can provide 100% of what it is rated at, at best 95% but your paying a lot of money for that sort of capabilities. The cheaper ones struggle to manage 85% continuously and even lower for the really bargain basement ones


Is your case a tower case or desktop case. Does it have the ability of having more fans added. If you live in a warm climate then the room temperature adds even more to the internal case temperature

Personally a 330w power supply is really struggling to run a 6 core processor and an Nvidia GT430 GFX card, according to what your specs are

Just read your post again, your PSU is 6 years old, so if you have never cleaned it, get a can of compressed air and take it out of your case and blow it through, but do it outside and don't breath it in, its horrendous stuff. Or better still take the PSU top off and be very shocked at how much dust is covering everything giving a nice warm blanket of heat of it all


If you can, rather than spend plenty of money on an upgrade, try spending that bit more on a decent power supply. I spent £100 on a 750w branded power supply. A lot of money to me, but it runs my Antec 1200 tower very easily, I had to replace the fan with an uprated fan as the bearings in the original internal PSU fan were failing and it was getting worse, so its back to being a slight hum rather than a loud annoying rattle and I wasn't throwing away an £100 PSU for a fan that cost me about £6 and an hour or so of messing about

A PSU with a minimum of two power rails will make your PSU's life easier as the load is then spread across two 12v systems instead of one struggling to run it all, that way one rail can run your motherboard and components such as the GFX card, the other rail can run your drives and other storage. I'd suggest an absolute minimum of 500w branded power supply, you may think that you could buy a 500w for much less but thats because the continuous rating of the non-brand PSU will be very unstable compared to a branded one. This time buying branded does make a difference

Just so you know, I run 7 hard drives, with most of them either 500Gb or 1TB, all SATA2. And a couple of older but reliable 500GB IDE hard drives until I get around to also changing those to at least 1TB SATA2, but preferable 1.5TB when I'm confident they won't fail after 12 months

I have an Nvidia Geforce GTX460 1GB, 16GB DDR-3 memory in 4 sticks (because 8GB memory sticks are about £70-£100 a pair otherwise I'd be running 32GB which is as much as the motherboard can handle), 1 DVD-RW, a massive Be Quiet Dark Rock 2 CPU cooler with two fans, two 120mm case fans and a huge case fan on the top of the tower case, plus an Intel i52500k overclocked to 4ghz

All this runs from a 750w power supply and when video encoding runs about 95% for 3-4 hours at a time. I've run the Intel burn in test which pushes the CPU at 100% load for hours at a time with no issues at all

I also edit using PhotoShop CS6 with panoramic images that can easily reach 1GB filesizes, so hence the ridiculous 16GB memory and massive hard drive space

I use 1TB hard drives because 2GB hard drives were too unreliable when they first came out, and I lose one 1TB drive if something fails not 2TB in one go

Thanks to everyone thats offered up assistance It has me wanting to fix the problem rather than just throwing all new componants in!.

So, what I've done so far is remove the unit from the entertainment center and open it up. Power up and make sure all fans are operating, and they are. I also made sure all boards where seated properly. Everything seemed good.

So then I downloaded and burned a copy of Memtest86+ and ran that for 8 hours. according to everything I've read Memtest86+ will test all but a few kbites of ram and it appears to have done just that. Results were all good after like 8 passes or so?

Next thing I did was ran Prime95 all night long. Everything performed great again...No blue screen.One thing I have noticed is my cpu temp is a lot lower with my case outside the entertainment center. running around 48degC instead of 58degC.

I'm now running Prime95 again with the unit in the entertainment center, going to see if I get the bluescreen this time.

Note: I just read Steptoe's suggestion about the PSU and I think your onto something(thank you so much for the detailed response) I'm going to open up the case and clean out the power supply. Then I'll consider getting a new one. Although it doesn't get much better than Seasonic I may be pushing it a little?

Edit: Well, cleaned the PS out, it wasn't bad dirt wise. Then when I placed the system back in the entertainment center and started Prime95 it immediately did a reset(didn't give any error message though?) Have a CORSAIR Builder Series CX500 V2 500W PSU on order. It was very reasonable and $10 off with promo code even! Hope that cures it, but it was probably time anyway? I'll come back in a few days and post the results.

That doesn't seem like much of a test. No reencoding of video or audio. I'd post something that required reencoding to give us a better idea of how fast your CPU is. (At least I thought that was the point.) Apologies if I'm wrong.

I think he posted in this thread by mistake, not sure why he came here with his log?


On to the results of my repairs:

It does indeed apear the PSU was the cuplrit. I've replaced it and not a single bluescreen since. I've ran through a few discs too, so I THINK the problem is solved!!

Well F$ckSticks! My machine started to blue-screen again!!? I don't know what to say now? It started doing the exact same symptoms as before, maybe it wasn't the PSU after all?

So, I THINK I can safely say I ruled out the RAM. I've hopefully ruled out the PSU now? I guess I'm to the point where I started unless someone can give me something else to try?

So, if not I've decided to build a new machine and I'd like to know what CPU would run BDRebuilder the best? After knowing this, I'll purchase the rest of my componants around that?

As mentioned previously I built a system around the Intel i52500k, overclocked it to 4ghz but using a DarkRock Pro 2 CPU cooler which is massive so you need a wide case, and I thought my last cooler was huge

Apparently its possible to push it to 4.5ghz before having to go to water cooling but 4ghz is enough as its very stable and very very rarely crashes on me. Usually due to updating a driver and getting the system throwing a wobbly when it gets confused and not down to pushing the CPU to far

To squeeze more out of video work, you could try the Intel i7 which is recommended for video work as the cache is more and CPU speed is faster, which after a quick read seems to run pretty happily at 5ghz with a good air cooler, and pay about another £50. Or go really silly and get the i7 6-core 980x. Which is faster for pure video work but the i7-2600k is better overall for general work


I run an Antec 1200 case, with 16GB of DDR-3 memory. But I also edit very large images in PhotoShop where my old system struggled with 'only' 4GB


Handbrake author is finally working on using the GPU in x264 code, BUT this doesn't mean it will be soon. So it 'may' speed things up considerably IF used correctly and from what I read only in some parts of video encoding as the GPU was never really designed for video coding (as I understand its great at shifting GFX tiles incredibly fast but the actual GPU commands just were not designed with the complexities of video coding which is why PhotoShop use it for some functions that need to shift photo data rapidly). We will have to wait and see
