Codec Utilities

Is there a utility that can enable and disable codecs on your system? For instance, you think that one codec might be causing a conflict with another, and want to disable it (without deleting the files), to see if that helps with the problem. Later, if it turns out not to be the cause, and one needs that code, one might wish to re-enable it.

I just looked at the video codecs on my system with the codec utility "Sherlock". Nice utility, gives a list of what codecs are installed, with a lot of info about each one. But unfortunately, it does not provide any capability to disable and enable (or uninstall) codecs. (That would be a nice addition to it!)

Anyone know what can do this?

ffdshow will allow you to select which codec renders which encoded media, but I don't know if it will work around a codec conflict.
