avi and wav problems

I have recorded several TV episodes using the ATI TV Wonder in .mp2 format, but, owing to the size of the files (~1.8 GB per 30 minutes), I can't keep too many of these episodes on my computer at the same time. I used FlaskMpeg to convert the .mp2 file to an .avi using the direct stream copy audio mode, and ended up with a 176 MB .avi file and a 49 MB .mp2 audio file. I then used Winamp's Nullsoft Disk Writer plug-in to convert the new .mp2 file to .wav format, creating a 330 MB .wav file. I tried using AviUtl v.0.96i to merge the video and audio files, but the program claims that it "Cannot open this file." I got a similar result when I tried to use AVIedit. Did I do something completely wrong, or there a simple error I overlooked?
