NO PAIN, NO GAIN

The best possible way to do a good capture depends, first of all, of the frame size, rata in kb per second and audio encoding on-the-run.

While a lot of codecs offers a lot of weird options in the capture control, they miss the most important fact in the capture process: the motion detection. Motion detection is the key factor in digital video processing (no matters if you're capturing analog sources, if you are trying some usb devices that does the convertion directly or if you're ripping or re-encoding some high quality digital source, as DV cameras, DVD and those like that).
Consider that a high motion video, like a lot butterflys flying, doesn't have the same motion than a nun prying !!!!!

The subdivision of the overlay or simulated overlay with some direct-x controlers works independently zone to zone, and the motion detection applies stadistical development trying to find the best promedy in every zone of the overlay or non-overlay captured frame, and, of course, the possibilty of apply those procedures implies a very high CPU work.

If you have a PENTIUM III or bigger, feel blessed. Pentium always be the most complete processor in this galaxy until that the apocalipsis come!!!...........and if you have a PENTIUM IV, feel blessed twice !!!...Forget about Xeon, Amd, and so on, 'cause they're processors designed for optimized data-base, game non-bitmap software and text processing works, and the video processing is left forgotten 'cause Direct-x tryes (with very poor results) to be a weird hardware solution made in software, with the dramatical consecuence of higher CPU usage, more higher disk consume and forcing both video capture and video card devices to work always on they tresholds of performance.

The capture process done through VGA devices takes free a lot of work to the central processor, specially if your VGA card supports overlay frames, and specially too if you're capturing with audio compression, cause the sincronicity between audio and video layers consumes a lot of CPU recurses too.

So, the key factors in a good capture are:

1. A decent CPU, Pentium will always be the best.

2. A decent and multi-thread operating system (Linux or Win 2000) dedicated only for video works (You gotta know how to install more than one operating system in your PC; another windows systems works patetic on capture process, a lot of dropped frames, specially win 98SE and win XP, CONSIDER THAT DROPPED FRAMES OVER THE 10% TOTAL FRAME COUNT WILL MAKE YOUR CAPTURE DEVICE PROCESSOR CRASH !!!!!!), with NO SERVICE PACKS OR SOME LIKE THAT ADDED, just an antivirus software, capture and video editing-processing-rendering software and no more.

3. Think always in your final work...if you're trying to do some vcd or multimedia video, how do you think to obtain a professional results capturing at the same frame size ?????.
Forget about Ulead Video Studio, WinVcr, and almost any MPEG capture software, 'cause they doesn't let you do ANY FRAME FORMAT CHANGE, and they always works over Direct-x and simulated capture drivers over the microsoft standard video format.
The frame size is almost the same idea that the MP3 compression algorithm.......MP3 always works over WAV files, and the compression factor is 11:1; and now add video......a lot more complex.
A good capture frame size for multimedia or vcd final video is 448x336 or bigger, and dont think that you can use a bizarre frame size (477x253 or some like that, this causes a lot of interlace and flicked frames), 'cause the frame subdivision always works IN A 8 FACTOR SIZE !!!.
And, a good capture size for bigger formats (DV, DVD, and so on) depends of the zoom abilities for the used codec in caprture process.

4.So, once the Operating System, VGA card and frame size troubles solved, take a look to your capture software...try and try and become a vampire wasting nights and nights trying to find the best performance software, and when you get crazy, try IUVCR.......simply the best, little and simple capture software, just think about this:
efficiency , vanguard and all the stuff related IMPLY SIMPLICITY
(is E=MC2 a complex formula ????? ).
Re-become a vampire looking for a good codec, and later try XVID4....try to do some high zooms in your capture with Vegas Video or Premiere, and you will see why I'm choosing it.

5.On video processing forget about frameserves, excepts the marriage VIRTUALDUB-TMPGENC, where you can pre-zoom your source to a bigger frame size; but, better even, join the poligamy with ffdshow and all its compatible software, cause ffdshow isn't a frameserver, is an embeded video filter...frameserving always introduces quality-loosing because they work over caches, not over real events !!!!

6.Dont waste lot of space using div-x codecs for your multimedia rendering.......just use VCD, that offers a very decent space consume per minute (10 mb) and, mainly, doesn't requieres too much CPU resorces.........can be played even Pentium I computers.

7.And, finally, dont do contrast manipulation for no-pixelation optimization........a darky video is a matter of ugly work quality, and a characteristic of a low quality video production.

See ya, keep enjoying the video paradise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good ???

A decent CPU will suffice. If you have a decent one, it doesn't really matter whether you use a Pentium or AMD. Yes, I know that a Pentium is faster wrt processing and encoding. But, it will also be more expensive.

This is really not necessary. You should have a separate partition of capping though.

You should cap both fields. Thus 448x480 (width depends on your cap device/drivers, see analog cap guide).

5.On video processing forget about frameserves
So, we should forget about AviSynth. Yeah, right ...

This is nonsense. If you disagree I suggest you post some evidence.

VCD is bad quality (half of the info lost, etc.). We can do better now ...

I agree with this one.

TRY IT !

A decent CPU will suffice. If you have a decent one, it doesn't really matter whether you use a Pentium or AMD. Yes, I know that a Pentium is faster wrt processing and encoding. But, it will also be more expensive.

Talking in "expensive" terms, it depends of your objective...cheeper becomes the most expensive, not only in video.......and expensive isn't always the best, the key factor is: BALANCE...if yuo really want to be expensive, buy a Mainframe or DVW processor !!!!

This is really not necessary. You should have a separate partition of capping though.

Ok, add a lot of work to your processor handling and admining 2 different partitions, even when you're capturing with a bigger data rate, above 12000 kbps (with an overloaded Microsoft system with service pack, a lot of temporals and an enormous shell; do you know about all the underground processes that a capture implies?)......had you tried XVID 4 using Quantizer at 1,and Motion Detection on Ultra High, and the pixel motion detection enabled ?

You should cap both fields. Thus 448x480 (width depends on your cap device/drivers, see analog cap guide).

Try and manipulate ffdshow settings in playing, not capturing, but, most important, use some Divx or video settings calculator and take a look in the relationship between Width and Height.....and 448 x 480, both, are 8 factors too...but better that this, always be 480 x 480, just the middle point between VCD and DVD. That's why I'm talking about the zoom properties of XVID4 codec !!!

So, we should forget about AviSynth. Yeah, right ...

If you're are married with AviSinth it's a matter of romanticism, not of practicity.
Frameserver is concibed for a non-expensive hard disk space wasting in a ripping process...had you tried loading whole VOB's in VIRTUALDUB? (Including pre-ripped subtitles in the subtitler plugin) .......if you have a good capture, why insert this on a frameserver (it would be good if the frameserver enhances the video parameters, most even, if it can do video noise reduction)...what do you prefer.....an external frameserver or an embeded filter ??? what is the lower job measure ???...but the best frameserving process will be always using one pc with videowin signal conversion (or a DVD playing in real-time the original source, analog signal on DVD is even more bigger than 720 x 480)and other pc with an usb capture device that does compression in real-time, specially if you're producing DVD....but you think I'm an expensive guy !!
But now, if there's in this galaxy a prebuilding process that expends less time than the original source duration (talking in facts of quality), meet me with the witch !

This is nonsense. If you disagree I suggest you post some evidence.

OK, gimme your email and i'll send you some, if you don't have enuff space in your inbox (attachments here are very little), i'll put it on my own server for download and I'll send you the url, and some login and password valid only for a day.

Cheepest, most of times, become the most expensive.....and expensive, almost always, isn't the best.

You appear to be in the classic position of knowing just enough to get yourself in trouble yet not knowing enough to know that you don't know what you don't know.

Oh...you're also being quite rude.

NOT SO RUDE

If I'm becoming rude, just forget about...As I can see you're very addicted to cheaper software solutions in video processing, so if it's your way to understand it, that's your way.

Just think about making 15 o 20 video editions at week (Marriages, Birthdays, Football games for fans, Animations and Institutional Presentations for Business and stuff like that), you just can't wait until a frameserver or a software encoder does everything for you, specially when an edition process follows and/or preceds that process.

How much time wastes a Ripping process ?

If you have a good dvd/cd/burner/reader device that can work, as minimal, at 52x, a whole dvd spends between 18 and 35 minutes, course, if you're using a good ripping solution (that permits audio layer selection and subtitles too), like smartripper, dvd shrink, dvd2one or dvd santa (this last, best of all); and, course, if you dont want to kill your reader/burner device using a stand-alone ripping software that reads at intervals of 10-40 second; and so on, if your device can be swithable to SMART mode on reading and finally if your Operative System is configured to handle a SWAP or PAGEFILE bigger that 1GB (there's when you'll see the difference between PENTIUM and the others...)

But now, if you haven't tried to manipulate the VCD settings in a good encoder, like TMPGENC (including frame size and matrix values, XVCD, KVCD and all the family of innovations), how can you say that about VCD or MPEG-1 processes ??? If you don't know about matrix manipulations and compression algorithms I think I'm in the wrong place, 'cause this seems to be an open forum for costumers, not for developers.

Talking avout VCD, I'm suggesting that as an easy accesible media distribution, 'cause you can't forever know the hardware limitations of your costumers, but most of all, 'cause not everybody can pay for a DVD video editting process, talking in terms of common people.

Of course, if a costumer wants some DVD or simmilar work, you proceed as it is, and there's is when you will see WHO is WHO in the almost infinite software solutions for this...and when you'll see WHO is WHO in the PC processors family.

I have two pc's to do frameserving 'cause the time factor is very important when you work with video...and I have my own DVW when a DVD work becomes, 'cause it's hardware with a main operative system dedicated exclusively to digital video encoding.

Frameserving through hardware devices, at this time, doesn't become a way to do video processing as you're trying to clasify my last comment; hardware technology is more and more accesible as time goes by, and the complete dependency of software at this time of transition isn't recommendable.

I won't spend lots and lots of words talking about minor details between a way and another way, so that's why I'm sending you the list of software that I've tried until I've taken the option of working with my cuttie babes: IUVCR, XVID4, ADOBE PREMIERE, PINNACLE, UMSPRO AND VEGAS and, course, TMPGENC and VIRTUALDUB...and another new jewel from Germany: PVR.

Want some of these or complete list? Send me some message and I'll put it on my webserver available for download, just for a day, considere that this forum only lets apply 16000 characters on replies.

This forum is about analog capping. I suggest you stick to it, and don't start about dvd ripping.

I also suggest that you only react on stuff what you don't agree with.

I think Fred said it quite nicely, but I will give some additional comments:

Quote:
Ok, add a lot of work to your processor handling and admining 2 different partitions, even when you're capturing with a bigger data rate, above 12000 kbps (with an overloaded Microsoft system with service pack, a lot of temporals and an enormous shell; do you know about all the underground processes that a capture implies?)
Yes, I know a little bit about capping. Of course, you shouldn't do any additional stuff when capping.

But, if you do additional stuff and your CPU usage is 90-100% I wish you good luck with capping using your second OS.

Quote:
had you tried XVID 4 using Quantizer at 1,and Motion Detection on Ultra High, and the pixel motion detection enabled ?
No. In general, people use huffyuv/mjpeg/dv for capping, and not without any reason. If, for some reason, you do want to use an "end" mpeg4 codec, you should use ffvfw and not DivX/XviD. The latter doesn't cope to well with noise and motion estimation (link can be found in the analogue capping guide).

Quote:
Quote:
You should cap both fields. Thus 448x480 (width depends on your cap device/drivers, see analog cap guide).
Try and manipulate ffdshow settings in playing, not capturing, but, most important, use some Divx or video settings calculator and take a look in the relationship between Width and Height.....and 448 x 480, both, are 8 factors too...but better that this, always be 480 x 480, just the middle point between VCD and DVD. That's why I'm talking about the zoom properties of XVID4 codec !!!
and grass is green ..., isn't it?

Quote:
If you're are married with AviSinth it's a matter of romanticism, not of practicity.
Yes, I know a little bit about AviSynth. I guess you don't, otherwise you wouldn't make this remark.

I suggest you do some reading about frameserving and what AviSynth (or VDub) can do for you to enhance the quality of your encoding (hint: read the analogue cap guide), before making more of these nonsense arguments.

Quote:
Frameserver is concibed for a non-expensive hard disk space wasting in a ripping process...had you tried loading whole VOB's in VIRTUALDUB?
Yes, I try it sometimes. The latest version still can't open them.

Yes, I'm aware that VDubMod can open them.

Quote:
OK, gimme your email and i'll send you some, if you don't have enuff space in your inbox
Posting two pics is sufficient:

1) Open your cap directly in TMPGEnc (or CCE if you prefer), encode to SVCD (or DVD if you prefer), and use a max bitrate.

2) Open your cap in AviSynth (or VDub if you prefer), open your script or vdr-file in TMPGEnc/CCE and you the same encoding settings.

Now, post screenshots of a common frame.

Quote:
But now, if you haven't tried to manipulate the VCD settings in a good encoder, like TMPGENC (including frame size and matrix values, XVCD, KVCD and all the family of innovations), how can you say that about VCD or MPEG-1 processes ??? If you don't know about matrix manipulations and compression algorithms I think I'm in the wrong place, 'cause this seems to be an open forum for costumers, not for developers.
Look, it's very simple. XVCD or KVCD is *not* VCD. VCD itself is bad quality.

Quote:
Talking avout VCD, I'm suggesting that as an easy accesible media distribution, 'cause you can't forever know the hardware limitations of your costumers, but most of all, 'cause not everybody can pay for a DVD video editting process, talking in terms of common people.
We are talking about analog capping here. If you actually try to learn something about VDub or AviSynth you will notice it is actually possible to get good quality using *free* video editors. Of course, it might happen that you want something that these editors can't do.

And yes, that might be a reason to use VCD. But, it doesn't change the fact that VCD is bad quality.

Quote:
Just think about making 15 o 20 video editions at week (Marriages, Birthdays, Football games for fans, Animations and Institutional Presentations for Business and stuff like that), you just can't wait until a frameserver or a software encoder does everything for you, specially when an edition process follows and/or preceds that process.
Look, it's very simple. It all depends on the quality that you want and the time you (= your PC) can spend on it. If you don't mind bad quality, or you are in a hurry (and thus using hardware encoder or capping directly to ffvfw/xvid without postprocessing or whatever) resulting in bad quality. Well, I have no problem with that. That's always a trade of we will have to make.

So...... who said that Pentium is a more expensive processor ????????

and grass is green ..., isn't it?

Obviously, you will never use a codec for a multimedia production...

...It seems to be you're one of Avs developers, just put a graphical interface and no code manipulation and I'll consider to change my opinion.....

Yes, I'm aware that VDubMod can open them.

So that's why I'm talking about Virtualdub as frameserver.

Posting two pics is sufficient:

Ok, you'll see those later of this post !

ook, it's very simple. XVCD or KVCD is *not* VCD. VCD itself is bad quality.

Of course my horse !!! (Who is being intransigent there ?? )We are talking about analog capping here. If you actually try to learn something about VDub or AviSynth you will notice it is actually possible to get good quality using *free* video editors

Ok, ok, honey is not for donkeys.

And yes, that might be a reason to use VCD. But, it doesn't change the fact that VCD is bad quality.

Course, if you don't try something else.

It all depends on the quality that you want and the time you (= your PC) can spend on it

Try MATROX USB......

Maybe the fact that two of the most experienced forum members (and one inexperienced one ) completely disagree with you should tell you something.

Do try to read some of the information available to you here on Doom9 before sticking your foot in your mouth. And just for kicks, try doing a forum search on the username "Wilbert" to get an impression of just what kind of experience backs up Wilberts statements.

Vcd is poor quality. True, there are people who still want it, but that doesn't change the fact that vcd is poor quality. With the current low price of a recordable dvd anyone doing
Quote:

is serving their customers poorly. Not trying to start a arguement of vcd vs dvd but just keep in mind, buggy whips are big sellers in certain places around the world, but I don't want one.

I have split off the conversation started by VCD MASTER as it has nothing to do, really, with the FAQ, but everything to do with his personal opinons on what's best, and doesn't belong in the FAQ thread.

I would like to point out that Doom9's forum has Rule #12, which states:
Quote:
...Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!
Now in this particular case, VCD MASTER hasn't asked "What's best?" but instead declared his personal opinions.

The reason that section of Rule 12 exists is to limit personal opinion from causing tempers to flare, and ill will to rise.

Unfortunately, this thread has not produced any positive discussion, and continues to degenerate.

Thread closed. Anyone who opens a new thread to attempt to continue this useless conversation will be in violation of Rule 16. Questions or comments may be sent to me via PM. And VCD MASTER, please see your PM from me as well.
