It seems I'd better stick with MPEG2.

mpeg2? why? that is very compressed as well...again if you are archiving for the purposes that the video MEANS something to you, use DV....it is the only one that gives you ability to edit in future, or upsample to HD....mpeg2 is not the way to go either.

DV is nothing but a intraframe only MPEG-2. It's not MPEG-2 exactly, but it's similar to just using I-Frames in MPEG-2. With that said, I'd recommend using regular MPEG-2. Bit for bit, the addition of having predicted frames should give MUCH better quality at the same bitrate. Besides, any modern CPU can very easily decode MPEG-2 -very- quickly.

So I think the verdict is... if you want simple, use high bitrate MPEG-2 (I'd do 8MB/s, but you decide).

If you want to save some space and aren't afraid of complex options, slower decoding (for now)... then x264 High@4.1.

I think the two good choices are:

1) DivX 6.x - Home Theater Profile
2) H264 - HP@L4.1

Both of these should be around 10 years from now.

But, archive the codec too; just in case.

I wouldn't go avi container either, there's no guarantee's it will be around in 10 years time. You could remux the video if required, but that just takes extra effort!
