h264 playback in Windows 7: WMP vs. VLC

I noticed recently that there are some h264 videos encoded videos display a slight de-sync when played with Windows Media Player version 12. However, the same videos do not have any sync problems when played with the latest version of VLC Media Player. I was wondering what might cause this behavior; are they using different h264 decoders that might cause this problem? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Both use their own decoder.

Have you ever installed FFDShow? It is a free codec is a DirectShow decoding filter for decompressing H.264. With, Windows Media Player will play H.264 file more smoothly.
