HOW TO: Use CCE 2.66+ trial with DVD2SVCD

this is a quick guide on how to use the CCE SP 2.66 and 2.67 trial versions with DVD2SVCD 1.1.3 build 1 and up.

Required software:BTW, there is no problem with having CCE 2.50 and 2.66/2.67 installed at the same time, you can still keep CCE 2.50 if you like.

EclCCE is needed for adding ECL support to CCE 2.66+ which is missing in the trial versions. Unzip EclCCE to the CCE SP 2.66+ trial version installation directory and make sure you run EclCCE at least once so it can pick up the CCE 2.66+ executable to run.

Next, run DVD2SVCD, switch to the Encoder tab, make sure Cinema Craft Encoder is selected and set the CCE path to point to EclCCE.exe. This is important, you must load EclCCE.exe, not the actual cctspt.exe CCE executable.

Because there are some filters in CCE 2.66+ that DVD2SVCD doesn't support (yet ?), we also need to utilize DVD2SVCD's new support for CCE templates, otherwise the settings of these filters will be unpredictable when DVD2SVCD runs CCE. Exit DVD2SVCD and run CCE to set up at least two templates, one for progressive and one for interlaced sources. In template setup, click the "Quality..." button and for the Progressive template, set Block Scanning Order to ZigZag and check Progressive Frame flag, for Interlaced, set Block Scanning order to Alternate and uncheck Progressive Frame flag. All filters should be unchecked unless you know what you are doing, see the CCE manual for more information. Hint: "Quantizer characteristics" equals "Image quality priority" and "Effect restricted vertical filter" is similar to the Anti noise Filter in CCE 2.50. Read the CCE manual if you are unsure about how to set up your own template.

You can also download sample Interlaced and Progressive templates for CCE 2.66 and 2.67 (I'm actually using these), import the appropriate .REG file by double clicking on it (close CCE and DVD2SVCD first).

Now run DVD2SVCD again, go to the Encoder tab, click the Advanced Settings dropdown. Check "Use CCE template" and select the template suitable for your source. You'll notice that some CCE settings in DVD2SVCD are now unavailable, meaning they are controlled by the template. Note also that you should use the Interlaced template only if your source video is interlaced and "Keep Interlaced" is selected for the Deinterlacing option on the DVD2SVCD Conversion tab. Otherwise select the Progressive template.

Now you are ready for encoding!

If you read the EclCCE manual, you'll notice it has a nice "bitrate savings for end credits" feature that cannot be used in DVD2SVCD (yet ?). If you don't mind some manual intervention, here is a way to make it work though.

Start conversion in DVD2SVCD as normal and wait for CCE encoding to start. Then hit ESC or Alt-F4 to cancel encoding, exit CCE and DVD2SVCD. Now run EclCCE to start CCE again, load the ECL file DVD2SVCD created and follow instructions for bitrate tweaking in the EclCCE PDF (note the comment on timecode offset!). Don't change any other setting, save ECL and start encoding.

After CCE has finished it's task, open the 'dvd2svcd project file.d2s' file that DVD2SVCD created in the conversion folder in Notepad. Change the "Project Position" value in the [Settings] section to one of the following values:
  • 34 for NTSC video if Pulldown needs to be applied
  • 36 for PAL video/no Pulldown
Save, close Notepad and run DVD2SVCD, go to the Misc tab. Click the Recover button and select the dvd2svcd project file.d2s we just modified. Click the Continue button.
