lame problems when using gknot

Hi there
I seem to have problems with the lame settings when ripping with gknot.
Everything works fine, except lame won't encode (resulting in an error message in gknot "ERROR: MP3-File-Size is zero!").
I have lame.exe in my gknot folder, and i tried to run the lame command in a dos window - where it gives an error with the settings "--alt-preset 128" (lame: unrec option --alt).
When accessing lame help, the "--alt" is not mentioned, so my question is this:
what is the "--alt" for??, and can it be left out??

Settings: Gknot 0.23, lame 3.92 (from gknot setup page).

Anyway, I don't use the audio encoding in Gordian; I use BeSweet and the GUI. Anyway, I and version 3.91 of Lame zipped up on my system and extracted it.
I didn't see in your post which lame help you were accessing (I have seen text files as well as html files floating around), but I typed

lame --alt-preset help

at the command line and it came up with a bunch of information. I think you can't use just --alt. You need to have the --alt-preset to get the help.

You also have to install LAME 3.9x, per Doom9's guide(s) to use --alt-preset. GKnot comes with 3.8.

as my post states, i am using lame 3.92, and i have tried to do the stuff suggested in the other post. I will try to access the lame help with "--alt-prese" and see the result.

did a fresh reinstall - and got lame 3.92 installed. Seems that the original 3.89 wasn't overwritten the first time when I installed 3.92 - no idea why !

btw. the "--alt" stands for "alternative" presets, because this was what they were in the beginning. Now these presets are kind of standard, but everyone got used to the --alt switch, so they can't/won't change it.

Well there is an alternative to using Lame when you have the Vob Files prepared and have been ripped with smart ripper. I use the program Vob2Audio. You can get it at the downloads page and I find that I encode my Mp3's alot faster with my 700 duron than using lame and Gknot. I know it doesn't do all the fancy things that lame can do, but It significantly reduces the time on my computer and Im it can make good quality CBR Soundtracks, plus it lets you select from the language list which one you want. Not sure if this helps any, but thats my 2 cents.

depends on the lame settings! If you just encode cbr with none of the fancy presets, lame is fast as lightning!

I've used this prog too, and the only thing I didn't like about it was that you couldn't raise the audio level. DVD audio is low and when I play it back, I would have to turn up my speakers quite a bit for a decent listening level.

Thats the only thing i forgot to mention, I wish it did pick up the audio some more, but im happy with it. My speakers are pretty powerfull.
