File too big to burn

First off thank you to all that helped with my last question on a failed attempt to backup a dvd with dvd2dvd. I have that working fine. Tonight I used dvd2dvd to backup one of my movies that is 2 hours and 10 minutes long and it created an iso that is over 8+ gigs. much too big to fit on the standard 4 gig dvd.
I ripped it at:
Rate Control Mode: CBR
Motion Search percions: High Quality
Bitrate: Max: 8000 Min: 2000 Min avg 2000 Max avg 7200 CD Size: 4464
Is it possible to make a movie that is over 2 hours long fit on a dvd with dvd2dvd? It's pretty frustrating to spend hours ripping a movie and not have it fit. Thanks again for everyones help.

Hi-

If I had to guess, I'd say it's almost certainly because you used CBR encoding, and it used your max average bitrate (either that or it used whatever the default bitrate for CBR encoding is). You should be using Multipass VBR encoding in my opinion. This is using CCE as the encoder, right?

Yes, it's perfectly possible to fit a movie over 2 hours on a DVDR. I'm authoring Man On Fire at the moment, and it's almost 2.5 hours long.

actually I am using tmpgenc. I will switch it to multipass vbr. And yes I am setting it default as I am not terribly familiar with the program. I am truly a newbie. What should my my maximum average bitrate be or does rate control mode determine that automatically?

There was 66590mb free on the drive before ISO creation and 62094mb after.
So by my reckoning the iso file is 4496mb
Perhaps marginally oversized but nowhere near the 8GB mark.

How are you trying to burn this file?
I would suggest you try DVD Decrypter. Set Mode to ISO Write and just browse for the ISO and click GO.

My guessing is that this will fit on a DVD-R.

It seems to be saying that the image file is 4,496.14MB in size (66590.14-62094.00=4496.14). That's still oversized by a bit, but nowhere near the size you mentioned.

I see you've been advised before not to use CBR:

Yes, TMPGEnc takes a long time. But for long and perhaps hard to compress movies, like Delovely, the extra pass(es) will make a big difference.

But if your image file is really 8+ GB in size, I can't figure out why. Maybe someone else can. I think you're going to have to encode it again anyway, so why don't you try VBR this time?

my files is 4.39 gigs and I use nero 6.3.1.11 to burn. The disk is being ejected saying not enogh space on disk to burn. Is there another burner that can deal with slightly oversized files? Or perhaps a setting i may have missed in Nero?

Hi-

Yes, DVDDecrypter, after warning you about the oversize, will allow you to go ahead and burn. But the result may or may not play. I made one about the same size recently, although it was of a complete DVD, and not movie only. The movie played fine, but I couldn't get into one of the extras.

To do it with DVDDecrypter, set Mode for ISO->Write, and then browse to where the Image file is located.

I've never tried burning DVDs with Nero, but it may allow you to do it after going into File->Preferences-Expert Features, and setting it to allow overburning.
