Standalone Compatibility and PQ

I've been encoding for sometimes using AK and Xvid. I'm starting to convert my TV show collection over to Divx for play on My Pocket PC and on a New RJ-1500MKII I bought at New Egg. Since this will be my first standalone Divx player I want to know if I should use Divx 5.21 or Buy Pro for better compatibility ? Also How is Divx compared to Xvid at the same filesize? I'd like all you pros out there to give me your impressions.

Thanks Guys

Is that unit DivX Certified? If not, it is probably better that you use DivX rather than DivX Pro. This will ensure your encodings are limited to MPEG-4 Simple Profile features, which should be the most compatible without knowing the details of the device.

Generally speaking, the latest build of XVID can produce higher quality video than that of DivX 5, but this is partly because it is not designed to be constrained for compatibility with CE, e.g. the portable hardware you are trying to use or DivX Certified DVD players. While very careful tuning will allow you to create compatible files, you should note that some core elements, such as VBV, required for reliable playback are still under development, while other tricky options (e.g. packed B-frames) can easily trip you up if you get it wrong. By limiting XVID in such a way that it also produces CE-compatible files you lose much of the potential quality benefit.

DivX Fusion, available from DivX Labs, will produce substantially better quality video than DivX 5.2.1 and, despite my slightly biased opinion , I believe that when working within the bounds of CE compatibility it does produce slightly better quality than XVID (101 forum members will read this far and hit "Reply" to argue the point no doubt! heh).

XVID is also working towards compatibility with DivX Certified profiles, so very soon you will have two great codecs to choose from. Doom9 is a great resource for all the latest XVID happenings, as is XVID.org if you are more technically minded.

For all the latest on DivX, including access to the DivX Fusion downloads, visit DivX Labs: http://www.divxlabs.com .
