mpeg2 bitstream decoding
Why? Have you sample that can't be decoded in software?

if MPEG2 and MPEG4ASP decoding can be offloaded to the UVD (not bitstream, but AMD/ATI claims it can offload parts), then an old P3-450 can be used as a video playback box if you plug in a Radeon 2400HD. That'd be nice, as those boxes are practically free if you check what people throw away these days.

Of course the need for MPEG2 offloading is not as big, as I think that the MS Mpeg2 decoder in Vista already uses MC or IDCT, and otherwise you can use PowerDVD's filter. I don't know how to achieve MPEG4 ASP offloading though.

Thanks alexins,
but whenever i register standalone mpc decoder i got this:

After unregistering mpc decoder everything turns to normal.

If i register just matroska splitter, mpc matroska source doesn't open "trial.ts" which you used.

If i use "file source-async" this time mpc matroska splitter doesn't agree with the source filter.

@Charger73Fan
@Kado

Actually i have found an output configuration that does give me (DXVA, no tearing, proper colors, proper scaling algorithm): enabling 'lock back-buffer' in WMR9 renderless did the trick.

However a new 'problem' appeared; CPU usage has gone up to 20-25% even with DXVA being active, where the previous configuration (overlay renderer) consumed only 2-4%. Hmm.

@developers
Consequently i agree to what Jong hast pointed out already: Please fix the outstanding bugs in the different output modules (clipping, noise lines, aspect ratio, etc) and give a proper hints concerning which output module/renderer to use.

And maybe even fix the 'remove-tearing' full-screen issue which i have been mocking about, because the current implementation that lacks the ability to display menues is quite useless: I use Haali splitter for MKV demuxing because when using the internal demuxer, ALL audio tracks are being decoded concurrently, whereas Haali allows me to explicitly select an audio track from the source file. Which in fact i cannot because of the missing menues...

Best regards,
Marcus

I agree. The OSD is getting much better. I was very pleased to see that Play/Pause, time remaining etc. all now appear on screen even in D3D mode. However, MPC-HC could do with taking a leaf from TheaterTek's book and allow access to almost the full range of "right-click" options via the OSD - to allow selection with remote control of audio stream, subtitles, chapters etc. A thorough "smartening up", especially of the D3D time bar, would be good also, so it looks like the quality AV appliance it is becoming.

@ohropax
Overlay Mixer is the fastest renderer available. Try different surfaces for the VMR9 Renderless renderer.
For me Haali renderer was the best but since it lacks DXVA support I use EVR custom presenter.

I've tried all available VMR9 Renderless surfaces but only the Direct3D surface allows the PixelShader to work (which i need for color correction).
I've tried EVR custom but DXVA does not work then.

You are using xp right? If so that's normal. Also make sure you are not forcing anti aliasing or anistropic filtering in the nvida/ati control panel.

Yes, i am using XP SP3 and have taken a look into the NVidia control panel just in case.

Is there an alternative to pixelshader-based color correction?

HD mpeg2 still takes a good amount of cpu power. even 720p recorded from TV takes 75% cpu usage on my 2.25ghz athlon64.

i was just hoping the existing code for h264/vc1 bitstreaming could be altered to support mpeg2 as well.

With svn 631 finally this problem has been solved :

EVR Custom + Microsoft MPEG-2 + Intel Video crashing MPC-HC when playing some mpeg2 / vob files

Thanks !

Please don't revert this !

8400 broken

Can anyone hint how to get this great application working again? I've been trying out different builds for about two months. After build number 523, dxva stopped working. All I get is a black window, mpc-hc thinks it's playing, but the video just stays at 00:00.

Builds prior to 522 work just fine, but 523-> are all black. I'm using a nvidia 8400M GS graphics adapter, Vista (32bit) and have tried half a dozen different drivers versions, with EVR and EVR custom. I also tried the standalone mpc decoder, but no luck.

Any info will be appreciated :)

Perhaps you also have the standalone filter installed?

true, after r523 DXVA was broken on Nvidia cards due to a change in the code, but this was reversed since r602 , so any version after this one works again. try the last version Alexins compiled: http://xvidvideo.ru/

Only on two files from my sample collection. Both created with an old version of x264 (maybe just coincidence). I'll send you a small file.

No minidump was generated. Just "Application Error : The instruction at "0x006101cf" referenced memory at "0x00000034". The memory could not be "read"."

No, that's not it, never even downloaded it ever.
Also, I tried the reverse, unckeck the DXVA and leave the FFMpeg checked. Tried with a DXVA compatible file. Expected result would be that FFmpeg would used to decode, instead DXVA is used! This is definitely a bug.

Thank you for replying.

I've been going through the 6xx builds as well (604, 613, 622, 629, 631 among others). The latest I tried was 631, and still the same problem occurs. At first I was just going to wait out the problem, but since it happened with the official version released in the end of june, I thought I should check what might be wrong.
