Capturing with VirtualDub

When i open VirtualDub I go to Capture AVI mode, setting the output file, connecting to my Hauppauge USB PVR2 tuner and makes sure it's connected, then I set tuner to 72 where I know there's a channel. But when I click Capture Video it says:

"Unable to start video capture." - Why?

I don't really do anything else

Double click VirtualDub.exe
File > Capture AVI
F2 > d:\test_capture.avi
Device > 1 Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 Encoder (DirectShow) (status bar says Connected to capture device: 1 Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 Encoder (DirectShow))
Video > Tuner... > Channel=72 Country=45 Input=Cable
F5 > "Unable to start video capture."

Sorry to revive this old thread, but that assertion is FALSE.

I found this post because I'm experiencing the same problem with a Leadtek WinFast PVR2000, and still haven't found the problem. It happens randomly. I also have a Avermedia TV Capture 98 and a Happuage 900H USB stick, which is hybrid angalog/dual, and I have succesfully captured with them and Virtualdub, but can only capture in one of each dozen of attemps with CX2388x (WinFast PVR2000). I have a dual system which can boot in Windows 7 64 bit or in Windows XP 32 bit. It happens in both OS.

Sometimes I've had such problems, but the solution was the order of doing things. It might work in Dscaler on first booting but not a second time, or if another program tried to use it. Think of it as a problem that registers are left in a messed up state, or that a resource is stuck in use. So I had to use programs freshly or in a certain order. Try experiments along that way, from a fresh reboot.
