Re-authoring DVD from DTS track audio to AC3

I have a DVD that I am backing up. It's just over 5gb complete w/ DTS audio. If I transcode the DTS audio to AC3 it'll be able to fit perfectly on a DVD-5 disc without having to re-encode the video.

I want to know if this is possible? I know I can demux the audio using PgcDemux, but will there be issues with re-authoring? Will I need to edit any files in PgcEdit or will just replacing the dvd files with a muxed VOB set w/ the AC3 suffice?

You can NEVER simply overwrite the VOB files manually, as the pointers in the IFOs will be wrong. And if you overwrite the IFO as well, you will lose the original navigation commands and other stuff.

Remux your title and the AC3 stream with muxman, and use PgcEdit to import the remuxed title. Select the original title in the left pane, and use File -> Replace VTST Titles. (PgcEdit will keep the original navigation stuff unchanged, and import the tables from the new IFO.)

If I do what you say, do I need to have the chapters already imported into the muxed titleset from MuxMan? Or will PgcEdit add the chapter points from the original IFO files?

The chapter points must be present in the remuxed title, because PgcEdit cannot create them. More precisely, to import the title with PgcEdit and keep the original chapter menu working as it should, the imported title must have the same number of cells than the original. If for any reason it's not the case, PgcEdit will recreate one chapter per imported cell, and you will have to modify them or edit the chapter menu manually to suit your needs.

In your case, you should export the celltimes.txt with PgcEdit or PGCDemux, and import it in muxman.
