New VC-1 Encoder SDK announced

Speaking of VC-1 and IBC, we've formally launched our new VC-1 implementation.

Here are details:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/m...2007/vc-1.mspx

And here are the partners that are announcing implementations based on it:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/p...erToolsPR.mspx

Basically better looking VC-1, faster, with more control (no reg keys!), with elementary stream supported for non-WMV use.

I'm more or less clueless when it comes to microsoft VC-1 release info, so apologies if this was previously covered and I missed it.

Is there any version of the SDK that J. Random Encoder can get their hands on? My uni has some sort of Microsoft AAA(A?) subscription if that helps.
What's the latest version of the encoder available for people like myself (still on XP) and is there a CLI that supports .avs input available for it? I've seen mentions of a 'PEP' in the HD DVD comparison thread, but I'm not sure what that refers to.

Will this new version of the encoder be available for free (perhaps in a Windows Media SDK update)?

Can we get some more info such as encoding speed improvements and perhaps a view of the perceptual quality enhancements?

I'm hoping the Windows Media guys could create a new release of Windows Media SDK including this encoder or I at least hope it'll be included as a part of Windows Media Player 12.

At this point, we're not talking about anything for the free encoder. This will be for commercial license only. However, there will hopefully be tools available with trial versions and such so the non-commercial community of users can at least play around with them.

Anyone here at IBC who's interested in seeing some demos or just saying hello in person can swing on by our booth in the Topaz Lounge. Here's the details:

Hi Ben,

I saw you yesterday . I saw 10 min of demo, I was with my boss (no time because 5 hours are not enough
to see all IBC show). The company where I work will receive soon the new VC1 encoder, I don't know if it will have a NDA
(not sure if we pay, but I understand we, may be, don't pay). I want to know if I can use the new encoder for this chalenge ?

(Anevia, new french company on IBC, make nice tool this year. @Zambelli some people come from VLC team)

Ach, you should have said hello!

If anyone else is at IBC, my schedule is in here. I can't believe I've got three more days of booth duty...

Fortunately, I'm not a legal/biz dev guy, so I've never actually read the eval license . I'll check for clarification on that point.

Although if you want the codec, your company will have to pay - that's kind of the point of a commercial license . There is a no-cost evaluation agreement so companies can test with it before committing to licensing it, of course, but a formal contract needs to be in place before it's included in products or an an internal production workflow.

What's the process for getting the encoder SDK? I couldn't find a page at the MS site which says how to buy it.

Drop me PM with your email address and some info for what product/workflow you're looking at licensing it for, and we can take it from there.

Note that the current program is really focused on professional content creation tools and workflows. We are still exploring ways to be able to get the new codecs availalbe for enthusiasts and other markets.
