Announcing Zoom Player v8 Release Candidate 3

I'm very happy to announce Zoom Player v8 Release Candidate 3.

It took longer than I initially anticipated, but the time didn't go to waste.
The entire Inmatrix team with a big thumbs up to the closed beta volunteer team stepped up and together we've stomped dozens of bugs, some dating back years.

Stomping out bugs is time consuming. It requires multiple user reports to finely target the bug and testing on multiple systems to ensure the fix is stable, all of which taking plenty of time.
While we waited for the bug tracking data to pour in, we used the time well.

We declattered interfaces, improved workflow and made them fully keyboard accessible.
We then added long requested usability features, such as the ability to search through Zoom Player's massive array of features and settings accessible through the options dialog.
We enhanced the internal JPEG decoder to automatically rotate pictures based on orientation information embedded in JPEG files (most cameras support this function).

And this small list barely covers the surface.

With so many changes, enhancements and fixes in the code, there was an internal discussion on whether to release a final version, or a third release candidate.
I made the decision to issue another release candidate. I feel a few weeks of testing is warranted to ensure a smooth final release.

This will be the last beta prior to the final release.
Please take this time to test the new and updated features and verify that bugs are properly squashed.

Cheers,
..Yaron Gur
..Lead . Developer

Upgrade note:
Since this is not the final version, the navigation interface skins currently available for download on the website have yet to be updated.
Once the final version is released, we'll update the existing navigation interfaces for version 8.

I don't mean to sound rude, but what advantages does Zoom Player v8 offer over MPC-HC?

Massive configurability.

For example:

I find the MPC-HC Filter manager to be rudimentary - it's very difficult to get my convoluted filter chain *just right*, and when you want different filter chains for different file types (etc).

The Zoom Player filter manager is extremely powerful - it can be complicated if you get stuck right in, but very powerful.

Blight - thank you for the search function, I was one of those who asked for that.

I installed this to try it out and it tries to do too much on its own without really working too well with other filters. And frankly the options UI is a mess. Back to MPC-HC for me.

Gaius:
Your statement is contradictory to what Zoom Player does. Zoom Player offer the most compatible experience with other filters through the Smart Play interface, allowing you to pick and choose which source, splitter decoder and renderer filters to use based on formats, file extensions, etc...

The Advanced Options UI is as orderly as can be with the vast flexibility and customization options it makes available to you. If you like things simple, there's the basic options dialog.
The options dialog is now searchable and that every setting is well documented, which is often not the case elsewhere.

I tried RC3 using MadVR, but had issues with tearing, seems like it uses windowed mode, not exclusive mode. At least I couldn't figure out how to get it into exclusive mode.

Unfortunately my first attempt to play an mp4 file using this zoomplayer version results in a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" - "Runtime Error!"

This is before configuring anything, just installed zoom player for the first time in years to try it out... is this common, ie is it like this before I configure my preferred decoders / renderers etc?

Can you give a more detailed error report, possibly with screenshot. ZP isn't itself built in VC++, it's a Delphi application, so the error is coming from a third party.
Usually the error dialog lets you see which 'module' causes the error, which would be helpful.

Vern:
MadVR switched to exclusive mode automatically when it detects 'fullscreen' mode (video area covering the monitor's dimensions). The display setting 'video coverts entire display area' (under adv. options / playback / video) needs to be enabled (it should be auto-enabled when you select MadVR as the video renderer).
Currently, you can't move the video around or MadVR loses exclusive mode. In a ost-8 version , I'll change that so you can zoom in and adjust the video position with MadVR.

Everyone:
If you're a ZP MAX user, here's an updated build:
http://t.inmatrix.com/zplayer800prefinal02.rar

It enables MadVR mouse wheel functions on the Control Bar, fixes a crash viewing JPEG files with an invalid orientation value and enhances the options dialog search function.

OK, thanks for the info. I guess I'll stick with MPC-HC for the time being, then.

Your issue is with the video position not covering fullscreen?

No, actually it is with the video position going beyond the screen edges.

An example is to use zoom mode to increase the image height to position the black bars encoded when the source (film) AR is 2.40:1 off of the active pixels of a projector. I am using an external anamorphic lens to give a 1.5x horizontal expansion. An example might be an image height of 1400 pixels and width of 1800 on a 1920x1080 screen.

On ZP, the MadVR status lines and GUI also are positioned with relationship to the total video height and width, not the actual video output height and width. Thus parts of it are off-screen when zooming the height or the width beyond the video output size.

There are also possible scenarios where both the width and height of the image may have to exceed the video output area {2.76:1 Aspect ratio source such as an Ultra Panavision / MGM Camera65). Another example is the BD of the Cinerama title "How The West Was Won" at2.80:1, since my screen AR is 2.65:1.

To the devs: Is there a link to the standalone version of the Zoom Player Install Center? For some very unknown reason the latest RC doesn't won't to run the Install Center no matter what I do, reinstall, clean-up registry leftovers, etc... (Windows 7 HP 32-bit).

Thanks.

TOM:
Make sure you have the "Zoom Player Install Center.exe.manifest" manifest file, without it, you have to disable UAC to get the install center working.

VERN:
Try this (ZP MAX) build, it maintains MadVR exclusive mode with image position support:

New ZP MAX build:
http://t.inmatrix.com/zplayer800prefinal06.rar

Here's the change list from RC3:
Code:
+ MadVR support for non-fullscreen images while in fullscreen exclusive mode
    (zoom in/out, panning, etc).

+ MadVR mouse-wheel scroll/tilt now works on the control bar.

+ The options search dialog now highlights the selected components, big thanks
to Mitko for the enhanced code.

+ Redesigned the Smart Play configuration dialog for greater clarity.

+ The Smart Play configuration dialogs now prompt you to update a modified
profile when clicking on a different profile in the list or clicking the
OK button to close the configuration dialog.

+ The guard-dog function now forces Zoom Player to close if it detects a
    freeze during shutdown.

  - The control bar and time display should now appear in the correct position
when moving the video area or zooming with MadVR.

  - JPEG scanline image fixed! Thanks Spuncut/OV2.

  - Folder image base names did not recognize the use of paths. Thanks Orf.

  - The Smart Play configuration dialogs now select the first profile from the
list when erasing a profile so the previously erased profile's filters do
    not remain active.

Thanks but still no luck, I'm going to format all the crap and see what happens on a fresh Windows 7 start.

Can you clarify what you mean by "wont run", you double-click the shortcut and nothing happens (the user interface doesn't appear at all)?
