Deinterlacing - what's best and what's worst?

I am a bit confused about all the different deinterlacing methods. So far I've tried verticalreduceby2 , separatefields.selecteven and fielddeinterlace.

I tried to use tomsmocomp as well, but GordianKnot wouldn't run it and sent an error message that it only accepted yuy2 or yv12. I'd already written "converttoyuy2()" in my script, so I thought I was fine. But no.

I really can't see much difference in normal film, but it's different with cartoons. Here is my experence with a Simpsons avi, recorded from TV:

No deinterlacing: Good, except for the combing.

Separatefields.selecteven: Very bad indeed.

Fielddeinterlace: OK, soft or neutral bicubic resize is best

Verticalreduceby2: Much better than separatefields.selecteven. Almost as good as fielddeinterlace. Best with neutral bicubic resize.

Any comments?

Yes. Read the forum rules and don't ask for the "best" anything. Posts like this cannot be objectively answered and can start flamefests. That's why we have a rule about it.

Deinterlacing - what's good?

OK. Though the words best and worst only appear in the title line. I also had a question why tomsmocomp doesn't work.

The rest was just a rapport based on my own experience.

Are we not allowed to discuss that?

I think you mean that you were reporting your own experiences for an empirical report on what has worked best for you. I should try deinterlacing a TV show once just to see how that works. I can't imagine why view only one of the fields would not work.

Maybe I do something wrong. Anyway, the problem with separatefields etc. occurs only on cartoons.

But what about the other question: Why can't I try tomsmocomp when I've written "converttoyuy2()" in the avs script? And how good is it, anyway?

I've also tried bob, but the files got very big.

Make sure you make it telecide(post=false) (otherwise a deinterlacer will be applied where it's decided necesary which kinda defeat the point of this test)

If you are using avisynth 2.5 this should work. If you are using v2.0x you need to have a different version of Tomsmocomp (see faq, Q34).
