Deinterlacing - what's best and what's worst?

I am a bit confused about all the different deinterlacing methods. So far I've tried verticalreduceby2 , separatefields.selecteven and fielddeinterlace.

I tried to use tomsmocomp as well, but GordianKnot wouldn't run it and sent an error message that it only accepted yuy2 or yv12. I'd already written "converttoyuy2()" in my script, so I thought I was fine. But no.

I really can't see much difference in normal film, but it's different with cartoons. Here is my experence with a Simpsons avi, recorded from TV:

No deinterlacing: Good, except for the combing.

Separatefields.selecteven: Very bad indeed.

Fielddeinterlace: OK, soft or neutral bicubic resize is best

Verticalreduceby2: Much better than separatefields.selecteven. Almost as good as fielddeinterlace. Best with neutral bicubic resize.

Any comments?
