BeSweet Mono or no Mono?
Hi all,
After searching through the forum for an answer to my question I am still unclear as to a solution. I am trying to create a mono lame mp3 using BeSweet. The source is a mono AC3 file. Everytime I try an encode I end up with a joint stereo mp3 which is not what I want. Others have had this problem but what I am uncertain of is this a limitation with BeSweet (ie mono just is not supported), or is it a bug in Lame? Thanks Snilly |

Well,
Based on some testing I've done I have to conclude that BeSweet does not recognize lame mono command line switches. In short the culprit is BeSweet. DSPguru, any plans to support mono going forward? Snilly |

features list of BeSweet v1.4 is closed. built-in mono support will be probably introduced in v1.5.

Besweet mono encoding error
I'm trying to encode a mono wav file to mono mp2. The resulting file sounds like it is double speed, but also has a pulsating stutter making it unintelligable.
The source is stereo AC3 converted with BeSweet to a 44.1khz stereo wav file. Then using AviSynth and Vdub it is edited and converted to a mono wave file. It is this file (wav, 44.1khz, 1ch, 16bit) that I am attempting to encode to 48kbps mono MP2. Here is a copy of the log. Although the log says the duration is 1:45:14.477, the actual length is half that (~52 min). 2lame can encode the file, but I find it occationally stalls on encodes, so I would like to replace it. would you mind trying transcoding directly the ac3 into mono mp2 ?
(don't forget to include your logfile)

No problem. I used the original AC3, but using the same method as above I haven't gotten a mono wav->mono mp2 encode to work with any file I have tried.
I included the 44.1 khz downmix for this job. Quote:
Ah ha. I ran a second encode, direct from the stereo AC3 -> mono mp2, only this time I didn't downsample to 44.1khz and the resulting file was perfect. Here is the log: Quote:

I tried a 48khz mono wav file to mono mp2. The results were bad, with the same stuttering pulsating distortion. And while the voices were high pitched, it didn't appear to be at double speed. Here's the log, note that it's a different source file than the previous test, but it was a simialar source, processed the same with the exception of the downsampling, and is approximatly the same length as the other file at just around 52 minutes.

I don't have the orignal source files, this file is of the same type and is processed the same as those previously. The duration is just under 45 minutes.
First I tried my normal 44.1khz mono wave. The results were like like the 48khz wav last time. It wasn't double speed, but still had the stuttering distortion and voices were very high pitched. Again, the log shows twice the duration and around half the bitrate. Log (source: 44.1khz mono wave) : Quote:
Log (source: 48Khz mono wav): Quote:

Log (source: 48khz stereo wav): Quote:
Edit: Actually I think Azid decodes (or can decode) 1 chan AC3 to stereo anyway, so it probably doesn't affect 1chan AC3 with the correct settings. Last edited by wmansir; 9th February 2003 at 15:50. |

Indeed there is a problem with mono !
I recorded Cartoon Network directly from satellite (Hauppauge Nexus-s) and theese toons are broadcasted with monoraul MPEG-2 audio. I need to convert to 44,1 KHz to do VideoCD for my child. And I get the same hard to describe horribly distorded sound. So for now I use SoundForge 6 to treat the *.mpa file (Splitted with Dvd2avi). But it's a pity, cause I love BeSweet for all other stereo broadcasts ! You'll make it, my Guru ! |

Thank you my Guru! Indeed it works now! So you had to change only the Hip.dll did you?
I'm not sure you really wants the log, but Guru only knows: BeSweet v1.5b15 by DSPguru. -------------------------- Using hip.dll v1.19 by Myers Carpenter <myers@users.sf.net> Using Shibatch.dll v0.24 by Naoki Shibata & DSPguru (shibatch.sourceforge.net). I guess one has to ask Danni Din to add an option into the "Output" dropdown list... Thanks again, and give peace a chance! Last edited by kikounet; 16th February 2003 at 09:30. |

Hi again
I'd like to know if Besweet can downmix from a stereo source, or pick a channel from a stereo source, to a mono output(MP3 usualy) ? My primary use for this is archiving old cartoon tracks as well as commentary tracks. Last I remembered, the mono switch didn't work so well for stereo input, but it's been a few months since I tried. I'm curious if this has changed. Take care Tony |
