Ripping versus reading speed

It's been my understanding regarding DVD_ROMs and DVD burners that "ripping" speed will be less than pure reading speed in both DMA and PIO modes, due to the fact that, in addition to simple reading, identification and removal of copy protection is occurring during "ripping".

Is this correct?

I don't think so, or the slowdown will be unnoticeable. The drive is so slow compared to the speed of the processor!

But some drives have a "riplock" that limits the speed when reading files from a DVD-Video, to prevent excessive noise. It's the case of all NECs, for example (unless you flash them with an alt BIOS.)
