what is the best DV-codec ?

i´m looking for a decent DV-codec for windows (xp pro). preferably one that is available free. but i´d be greatful for replies concerning professional ones as well.
my goal is to achieve the awesome quality i get when i am capturing (better: copying) at a friend´s macintosh with FinalCut.
any suggestions or experience reports are appreciated.
