why are my subs in letteboxed?

I just started using DVD2SVCD a few weeks ago. I mainly rip Japanese Anime with the audio in japanese and subs in english. Now I just did one dvd and the first episode came out almost fine (the first few minutes was letterboxed and the subs were hard to read cuz it looked kinna transparent)but the rest were all letterboxed for some reasons. Is there anyway to have the subtitle exactly like the original dvd? I did one and it was actually almost the same 'cept the subs were in white instead of the original yellow. Also I had to rip the dvd using smartripper since it had only one .ifo and i wanted to break it down by episodes. I want to do 2 episodes per cd and most anime dvd have like 3 eps.

What do you mean by 'letterboxed' subtitles?

I also have some subtitling questions. How well do standalones support the CVD methods? I've been assuming that the SVCD method is the best and most official. Is CVD just as good?

Using SVCD subtitles, in the latest DVD2SVCD (1.0.5 build 4) it generally works but I see white or black lines under some (not all) subtitles. Any fix for this?

>> Update

I just tried rebuilding the image with the new vcdimager 0.7.12 (I think the bundled version is a pre-beta); same results.

Correct me if I am wrong:
Letterbox subtitles refer to widescreen movie projected on a 4:3 TV. The subtitles are mostly on the lower black bar.
Widescreen subtitles are for viewing on a 16:9 TV and are mostly inside the movie frame (depends of the aspect ratio of the movie).
For the transparency problem, use http://212.88.77.140/DVD2SVCD-1.0.5-B4-Pre2.zip
The "finished product" looks the same whether you have used CVD or SVCD subtitles. It all depends on the standalone. Not many support either of them.
