Miyazaki’s Spirited Away (Region 1) Cheat Sheet

The tools I used: IFOedit 0.95 and IFOedit 0.91

First of all, I’d like to say this movie was great!

In this guide, we will PREPARE our files by removing as much unwanted stuff before we process them through a transcoder. They take up valuable space that can be used toward our main movie and menus in retaining as much of our original video quality. I did it this way using IFOedit to strip many things instead of using another program because I had a better control on getting maximum shrinkage. With that said and you are interested to learn, let’s begin. We'll start by having our Main Menu display immediately upon DVD insert.

____________________________________________________
1. Main Menu Upon DVD Insert

Before you get the chance to see your main menu, you will have a lot of intros playing. What we will do in this step is bypass all those intros and jump straight to our Main Menu when you insert your DVD. To do that, open up your VIDEO_TS.IFO with IFOedit and go to VIDEO_TS.IFO / VMGM_MAT / First Play PGC / PGC Command Table. Change Pre Command 7 to new command as below. Right click on line and select “Edit Command”. Select “(JumpSS_VTSM) Jump to Titleset Menu” with Title Nr.: 1, TitleSet Nr.: 1, Menu: root.

OLD > 7.Pre Command (JumpSS VMGM) Jump to VMG PGC: 8 [30 06 00 08 00 c0 00 00]
NEW > 7.Pre Command (JumpSS VTSM) Jump to TitleSet(vts): 1, Title(ttn): 1, root-menu [30 06 00 01 01 83 00 00]
_____________________________________________________
2. Save IFO and BUP.
_____________________________________________________
3. Now that we successfully bypassed our intros, it’s safe to remove those Titles because they just take up unwanted space. But before we do that we need to create a new sub-folder named “stripped”. This will be your “Destination Directory” you will use for your new files. So create our "stripped" folder now.
_____________________________________________________
Before we start, I like to show you an overview (Figure 1.) of what files we have and the description of each TitleSet so you know what you are working on when we shrink them.

4. Stripping Out Unwanted Title in Our DVD

Open up VTS_02_0.IFO in IFOedit and press your “VOB Extras”. Have these settings checked. Click OK when done.

Options
X Strip VobID’s
X Correct Vob-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
X Correct original IFO files

VOB Expert Options
X Remove P-UOps
X Remove Macrovision
X Adjust Vob-Unit pointers
X Adjust Audio/Subp point.

File/Directory Paths
Destination directory: (browse to our “stripped” folder)
X AutoCopy Menu-files to destination
_____________________________________________________
5. Check only one VobId to keep (see below) and “Correct IFO tables” should be checked by default. Click “Strip it” button to start process.

Kept VobIds
VTS_02: 2
VTS_03: 3
VTS_04: 10
VTS_05: 4
VTS_06: 3
_____________________________________________________
6. You’ll now have a message box saying “Finishing correcting VOBU pointers!”. Click OK.
_____________________________________________________
7. Close IFOedit
_____________________________________________________
8. Go to your “stripped” folder and verify that you have 7 new files. If not, something went wrong so you’ll have to repeat the steps again. If so, drag all your new files into your original folder and check “Yes to All” to replace your files.
_____________________________________________________
9. Open VTS_02_0.IFO in IFOedit and press “Get VTS Sectors”
_____________________________________________________
10. Repeat Steps 4 to 10 with VTS_03_0.IFO , VTS_04_0.IFO , VTS_05_0.IFO, and VTS_06_0.IFO.
_____________________________________________________
11. Disabling our Unused Menu Buttons

We have now shrank all our Titlesets that contained our Bonus Features and Trailers, so no sense on having the buttons enabled so let’s have them disabled.

For our Bonus Features, go to VTS_01_0.IFO / VTS_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_15 / PGC Command Table. Right click on Pre Command #1 and select “(LinkPGCN) Link PGC” and PGC Nr. 2.

OLD > 1.Pre Command If GPreg<3> == (cmp-val)<300> then Set GPreg<3> mov (set-val)<0> [71 a0 03 03 00 00 01 2c]
NEW > 1.Pre Command (LinkPGCN) Link PGC 2 [20 04 00 00 00 00 00 02]

For our Trailers, go to VTS_01_0.IFO / VTS_PGCI_UT / PGC-Menu_16 / PGC Command Table. Repeat the same procedure as removing our Bonus Features.
_____________________________________________________
12. Save IFO and BUP.
_____________________________________________________
13. Stripping Out Unused Menus

Now that we have our buttons disabled, we can get more unwanted stuff removed by shrinking our menu VOB. In VTS_01_0.IFO, press your Menu Extras button and the following should be checked by default. All you need to input in your Destination Directory.

Options
X Strip VobID’s
X Correct Vob-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
X Correct original IFO files

VOB Expert Options
X Remove P-UOps
X Remove Macrovision
X Adjust Vob-Unit pointers
X Adjust Audio/Subp point.

File/Directory Paths
Destination directory: (browse to our “stripped” folder)
Note: Inputting a Destination directory will have your “AutoCopy Menu-files to destination” unchecked.
_____________________________________________________
14. In your Stream List windows, check all and then uncheck the following VobIds.

VobId 16: Bonus Features Intro Menu
VobId 17: Bonus Features Intro Menu
VobId 18: Bonus Features Menu
VobId 19: Trailers Intro Menu
VobId 20: Trailers Intro Menu
VobId 21: Trailers Menu
_____________________________________________________
15. Press Strip it
_____________________________________________________
16. Click OK for your “Finishing correcting VOBU pointers!” message box.
_____________________________________________________
17. Go to your “stripped” folder and verify that you have 3 new VTS_01_0.* files. If not, something went wrong so you’ll have to repeat the steps again. Close IFOedit before dragging all your new files into your original folder and check “Yes to All” to replace your files.
_____________________________________________________
18. Open VTS_01_0.IFO in IFOedit and press “Get VTS Sectors”
_____________________________________________________
19. Save IFO and BUP.
_____________________________________________________
20. Correcting Angle Chapters

What we are going to do now is strip Angle 1 out of our main movie which is in VTS_01. Miyazaki’s DVDs always have Angle 1 for Japanese and Angle 2 for English. We want to keep our English angle. Unfortunately, IFOedit 0.95 does not recognize angles because it is a bug. IFOedit 0.91 does so open VTS_01_0.IFO with it now. Since we will be stripping out angles, might as well strip out our Japanese audio to cut down on our end size.

Before we start stripping our movie, we need to fix something first. If we don’t, our new files will have messed chaptering. Either we do it now or later but I chose to do this now.

Look at Figure 2 below, that our 3 original Angle chapters. If stripped out our Angle 1, our chapters would be deleted and IFOedit just renumbers the next chapter. To avoid, we need to have it like Figure 3.

Code:
Figure 2.

OLD

VTS overview:

PGC_1 (program chain): [Title(TTN): 1]
  [Ch 01] [Pg 01] [Cell 01] [V/C Id: 2/ 1] (Angle 1)
                  [Cell 02] [V/C Id: 3/ 1] (Angle 2)

  [Ch 16] [Pg 16] [Cell 19] [V/C Id: 5/ 1] (Angle 1)
                  [Cell 20] [V/C Id: 6/ 1] (Angle 2)
   [Ch 17] [Pg 17] [Cell 21] [V/C Id: 5/ 2] (Angle 1)
                  [Cell 22] [V/C Id: 6/ 2] (Angle 2)

Figure 3.

NEW
                  [Cell 01] [V/C Id: 2/ 1] (Angle 1)
  [Ch 01] [Pg 01] [Cell 02] [V/C Id: 3/ 1] (Angle 2)

                  [Cell 19] [V/C Id: 5/ 1] (Angle 1)
  [Ch 16] [Pg 16] [Cell 20] [V/C Id: 6/ 1] (Angle 2)
                  [Cell 21] [V/C Id: 5/ 2] (Angle 1)
 [Ch 17] [Pg 17] [Cell 22] [V/C Id: 6/ 2] (Angle 2)
To fix that, go to your VTS_01_0.IFO / VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_1 / PGC Program Map. We need our original PGC Program Map (Figure 4) to be like Figure 5. Double click on line and change to new value.
Code:
Figure 4. Figure 5.

OLD NEW

PGC Program Map: |PGC Program Map:
    Program_1: Entry cell number 1 | Program_1: Entry cell number 2
    Program_2: Entry cell number 4 | Program_2: Entry cell number 4
    Program_3: Entry cell number 5 | Program_3: Entry cell number 5
    Program_4: Entry cell number 6 | Program_4: Entry cell number 6
    Program_5: Entry cell number 7 | Program_5: Entry cell number 7
    Program_6: Entry cell number 8 | Program_6: Entry cell number 8
    Program_7: Entry cell number 9 | Program_7: Entry cell number 9
    Program_8: Entry cell number 11 | Program_8: Entry cell number 11
    Program_9: Entry cell number 12 | Program_9: Entry cell number 12
    Program_10: Entry cell number 13 | Program_10: Entry cell number 13
    Program_11: Entry cell number 14 | Program_11: Entry cell number 14
    Program_12: Entry cell number 15 | Program_12: Entry cell number 15
    Program_13: Entry cell number 16 | Program_13: Entry cell number 16
    Program_14: Entry cell number 17 | Program_14: Entry cell number 17
    Program_15: Entry cell number 18 | Program_15: Entry cell number 18
    Program_16: Entry cell number 19 | Program_16: Entry cell number 20
    Program_17: Entry cell number 21 | Program_17: Entry cell number 22
Now we are ready to strip our Angle 1 and our Japanese audio. Remember to use IFOedit 0.91 or else you won’t get to strip your Angle.
_____________________________________________________
21. Stripping Out Angle 1 and Japanese Audio

Note: You must use version .91 in this step for stripping Angle 1.

Open up VTS_01_0.IFO in IFOedit and press your “VOB Extras”. Have these settings checked. Click OK when done.

Options
X Strip Stream’s
X Strip VobID’s
X Correct Vob-Unit (Navigation Pack) pointers in VOB-files
X Correct original IFO files

VOB Expert Options
X Remove P-UOps
X Remove Macrovision
X Adjust Vob-Unit pointers
X Adjust Audio/Subp point.

File/Directory Paths
Destination directory: (browse to our “stripped” folder)
X AutoCopy Menu-files to destination

X Remove Angles
Keep Angle 2
_____________________________________________________
22. In your Stream List, check three English streams. (1 audio and 2 subtitles). “Correct IFO tables” should be checked by default. Click “Strip it” button and again to start process.
_____________________________________________________
23. You’ll now have a message box saying “Finishing correcting VOBU pointers!”. Click OK.
_____________________________________________________
24. Close IFOedit
_____________________________________________________
25. Go to your “stripped” folder and verify that you have 12 new files. Now, before we drag these files over, we need to delete our VTS_01_07.VOB in our original folder. As you can tell, our files in our “stripped” folder has shrunk from stripping and we don’t have a VTS_01_7.VOB. So delete your VTS_07_1.VOB now. Go back to our “stripped” folder and drag all your new files into your original folder and check “Yes to All” to replace your files.
_____________________________________________________
26. Open VTS_01_0.IFO in IFOedit and press “Get VTS Sectors”
_____________________________________________________
27. That’s it! You can now process this through your favorite transcoder.

What I used as my transcoder was DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5. I initially did it without deep analysis and the end results were great in my opinion. If you want to do it with deep analysis to get a little more quality than you can do that too but it’s going to take longer to process.

Is there any way you can make your posted cheat sheets not so wide? Every time I try to print posts as wide as yours, I lose the right hand side of the document. I've tried making my margins zero for page setup and I've tried just selecting the text for print out but I still lose characters on the right side of the document. If you look at other posts you'll see the difference in width that I'm talking about.

Thanks.

@bweeston

Sorry about that! I'll try to fix it when I get the chance. *Edit- Done.

Are you printing it using the "Show Printable Version" at the bottom of the page? I thought that corrected the sizing.

I guess that button was a little too obvious for me to see . I'll certainly try that.

VTS_02?

Erm... you mean VTS_01_0.IFO, right? (Or have I seriously misunderstood something here?)
Thanks!

Ok, this might fix my problem. When I ran my vobs thorough DGIndex, the preview kept jumping from the video to a second 'hidden' track (actually, was just the movie in line art form). If I edit the cells, will that fix my problem???
