Questions about SetCompData...

Hello All,
This is my first post in the forum...
When I'm encoding a movie, in the Jobs list file, there is the line:
VirtualDub.video.SetCompData( num , string );

I understood that the string represents the encodung setting.
this string is the codec setting without any connection to the file
that going to be encode ? or this string is diffrent for any file (same setting) ?

What represents the number befor the string ?

Someone knows how can I get this string using C# ?

Sorry for my english...
Thanx,
