DVB in the US

I live in the US. sigh

Is it possible to buy a PCI card that is capable of capturing the digital data stream from DirecTV or Dish Network?

Is this called DVB? Where can I buy one?

I have been looking for a way to capture and archive TV in digital format. I have a fairly severe Star Trek problem.

Yes, and no. Or, more accurately, NO... (and yes). I don't think it's trivial, but I believe it can be done.

I'm not sure if that's called DVB or what, but you can start looking at www.digitalconnections.com (MyHD and HiPix, maybe?), and browse the AVS Forum, at www.avsforum.com. This here forum (Doom9) is great, but it doesn't cover quite what AVS covers. And, of course, the clientele is somewhat different -- the AVS people have got North American digital TV stuff down to a near-science.
