Exterior dvd

I have hooked up an exterior drive , a Samsung S 243, as I found it in my garage. Does not seem to be as efficient as the built in drives, i.e., takes a long time to recognize disks, sometimes does'nt at all, tried a Lite-on Iahs 524A same thing, are dvd's hooked up to a Sata adapter as reliable as the drives internally connected?

They are the same, provided they have the same model number.
