idea for a player list

I know videohelp.com has a large list of DVD players and I do not wish to duplicate that, but what it is sorely lacking is a crucial piece of info (well, it's more than that but anyway): what chipset is being used.

How about we start a list of players with their chipsets used in this very place. I often see some DivX capable DVD players advertised, but without knowing the chipset, the whole featurelist is kinda useless. Having the same chipset bounds what a player can do. I'm currently looking around to replace my old elta 8882, and I don't particularly care about brand, but I very much care about the chipset and I'm not gonna buy a Sigma 85xx or ESS based player as those chipsets simply aren't up to the task.

Then perhaps we could add the player's MPEG-4 specific features as well. What do you think?

It is definitely a good idea, it's very difficult to find specific information on MPEG-4 players such as: QPEL support, subtitle support, does it output AC-3 as a digital stream, etc..

Maybe have some downloadable files to test each feature?

chipset

Doom9, which chipset are you favouring?

I just had a bad experience with Kiss 1000, played about 50% of my disks but could not play MP3 disks without freezing after a couple of tracks... so I am looking too.

Thanks,
Mark.

Well.. until recently the MediaTek was definitely the way to go, now with the new zoran (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84327) , sigma (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=84003) and amlogic (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=82325) I'm not sure which is the one to go for. Though as far as I know, there's no chipset that does the full MPEG-4 ASP@L5. But any of those chipsets should be okay. Don't go for any ESS chipset or the old Sigma ones (85xx series), they're definitely outdated.

MP3 Tag info

hi again,

thanks for the threads... i will read em.

one thing I did like about the kiss-1000 is its ability to show MP3 tag info, something Yamada tech support say the 6600 cannot do because of chip limitations. I wonder if any of these new chips can handle showing MP3 tag info. (and one with a decent LED showing tag info with the TV off would be amazing.

till later,

Mark.

Philips 720SA and Yamaha DVD-S550 show ID3 Tags on screen and display (scrolling).
And dont belive this "chip limitations" crap, thats only a poor excuse from the manufacturer.
Its only a matter of firmware.
Elta for example say the same for their 8883 (same chip as yamada 6600), but what a wonder, with the right firmware from a different player it shows id3 tags...

Since Elta hasn't really been updating their firmware - which firmware did you use, and did you run into any problems? And you wouldn't happen to have a link to it?

MP3 Tag info - Chipset or Firmware

Hi there Zhnujm

This is so confusing. Here is the email Yamada Tech support sent me regarding the differences between the 66 and 6700 as well as Tag Info...

"Both players are using the same chipset, so there is no big
difference. DVX6700 does also support OGG file format directly, firmware for this and DVX6600 is in development and will should be released shortly. Concerning MP3 features none of the MTK chipsets do support additional MP3 playback functions properly. Some ESS or Zoran based players do support this but they are not so powerfull for MPEG4 and DVD Playback like MTK chipset which is used in DVX6600 and DVX6700."

Im not sure what he means by MTK chipsets, since i thought the chipset they used was a 1389?

Thanks forthe input,

Mark.

MTK means "MediaTek" and is the company that produces the 1389 chipsets.

HTH.

Well, i dont know what he means with "additional MP3 functions", but id3 tags could not be the problem. Both Philips 720 and Yamaha 550 are also Mediatek 1389 based (and show id3 tags).

@Leak:
I was trying the firmware from the fortune mp151, it shows id3 tags in the right side of the browers window and also has a nice outlined and centered font for divx subtitles, but unfortunatly you wont have any sound output if oyu use this firmware with the elta.

A damned fine idea Doom9,

If some members confirm which players support the ESS chip-set, I will be more than happy to create a list in the ESS chip-set based - Player Information thread. Which I guess could be used for cross referencing.

Cheers

well let me start then:

elta 8882: Sigma 8500
gran prix: MTK 1389GE

though for a feature list we'd need some standard test disc.. and you might recall many vain attempts to come up with an universal testing procedure that actually works.

though those two players offer the basic features you can expect from that chipset. the elta plays ogg vorbis as a bonus but that's about it.

MediaTek 1389 DE
E-Boda DV-555X (Standard Version)

MediaTek 1389 FE
E-Boda DV-555X (310 FE Version)

Both Versions read divx subtitles. Centered and outlined. Can be selected from the menu the colour of subtitle (Yellow and White) and the Size of subtitles (Big and Small).
Available only in Romania.

I'm an subtitles fan so I presented the features regarding subtitles. Other subtitles fans can use various firmwares modified by me regarding the quality of the subtitles font here:

enjoy,
Mtz

they also have a divx test-cd so you can send in your own tests.
