ASF to AVI

Hi,

I have a question (it doesn't really has something to do
with divx, but with VirtualDub):

On www.ironmaiden.com, you could look to a concert of
them, in asf-format. But you only could look at it for
2 days.
Now, I have used 'Streambox VCR' to download the whole
file on my pc. But to watch the movie, you still have
to connect to the server, and I get the message that
the period to watch the movie is over. (although I have
the full movie (2O6 MB) on my pc).
So, I want to get rid of that checking, and I thought
that I could do that by converting it to avi. But
there is my problem: I don't seem to manage to do that.
I know I need Virtual Dub 1.3d with ASF support to do
that, and I have that version, but when I open the movie
with it, I get following messages:

1)the asf file is 216483785 bytes long, but was originally
216525361 bytes when encoded. it may have been
truncated or corrupted.
----> Open file anyway? off course

2) Could'n load decompressor for format 'WMV1' (unknown)

Any idea how I can convert this file??? (Or just get rid
of this checking?

thanks in advance,

regards, schoene

I believe WMV1 is actually Windows Media 7 which cannot be opened with VirtualDub. VirtualDub only opens up to MS-MPEG4 V3.

about asf....
anyone knows if you can convert them to avi just changing manually their fourcc code,
or they have a whole asf header ?

@schoene
try to open it with tmpg
then try with graphedit.
both have wmv2avi capability

Hi, I allready tried to use graphedit,
but when I choose 'Render File' (I never
used graphedit, and I don't know how to
do it, but I think that is the way I should
do it), I get following message:

Could not construct a graph from this file.

-have you installed all necassary filters?
-Note that the 'Render File' menu option cannot
render +.GRF files.

(Return code: 0x00d00c8)

and if I use tmpgEnc, I get following message:

file "<path>\ironmaiden.asf" can not open, or unsupported

any help???

thanks,

schoene

Well, VD ver 1.3c (or was it b?) is asf-capable. It was at that point in time when Microsoft asked Avery not to support it anymore, so he complied. It's at dooms (full) software page. I know it's called 1.4c there (even if the "about field" says "b"), but I suspect that it's a unofficial version, derived from the 1.3 series, made for that single purpose. Anyways ... go get it

Cheers

possible reason for not beeing able to open asf file:

make SURE you can play this file normally with windows media player. if you can't do that, then you probably don't have the required decoders on your system (strange, but may happen), or the file is actually damaged.

so, on either case, no application will be able to open the file, including vdub 1.3c unless you fix it, and/or install the required codecs.

sorry i can't help you with these though, i never use asf files.

cheers

VD = VirtualDub, yes.

Very popular. Should be accessible from a number of places on the internet.

Idea

I just thought of an idea of how to get this to work, but I don't have time to test it. Since TMPG can open ASF and WMV, could you just open the file in there, save the tpr file, convert with VFAPI, open in VDub and direct copy stream Save AVI? Or would this not work because VDub is reading uncompressed AVI due to the frameserving?

Well, If u read the first post, you can read
the same message: I allready tried it like
that.
And I still don't know how to do it. If I
find the solution, I will certainly post it.
But I'm afraid that I don't know enough of
movie-files to solve it.

regards,

schoene

I don't know about the "expert" stuff, but maybe you should try installing the CODEC it's asking for (like Avih suggested).

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/index.html#codecs

There are some alternative tools for cutting WMN, ASF n'stuff too.

Cheers

Edit: @Shoene, Sorry for not looking properly at your first post.

Hi, I tried the program 'asf tools' and it
tried to convert it, but if I looked at the
output, nothing is shown.

The problem is that there is some protection
on the file. So the first thing that must be
done, is removing this protection. After this
is done, it must be possible to convert it
to avi.

Anybody knows how to do this?

::: Below are tools that help you split/cut big DivX/AVI files into smaller ones and also join up smaller ones to bigger ones. To make sure the AVI files are cut/joined properly, it is best to use an AVI/DivX editing tools (such as VirtualDub) - we also have some AVI cutting and AVI joining guides, which may be helpful

ASFCut - an ASF/WMV cutting/splitting tool
ASF Tools - an ASF/WMV cutting/joining/repair tool
AVIChop - an AVI cutting/splitting tool
AVI Devil - an AVI joining tool
AVI Revolution - merge low and fast motion DivX AVI files
CompressAVI - with this tool it is possible to compress divx avi files with 20-40% without quality loss
DivXCAT - DivX Cutting AssistanT, analyzes the DivX 5.x movie to get the perfect sized cut
Peck's Power Join - an AVI joining tool
ProjectDivX - merge low and fast motion DivX AVI files

Some AVI/DivX editing tools (such as VirtualDub) also allows you to cut/join (ie. edit) AVI/DivX files, so you may wish to try them as well. We also have guides on cutting and joining AVI files.
