Default settings, windowed mode and disabled "use a separate device for presentation". Works great with my GTX 680 and 301.24 drivers.

I think the problem I'm having is somehow to do with deinterlacing, it's when i'm playing a 1080i file that i'm getting either frame drops in windowed mode or presentation glitches in exclusive, though i'm just using NV cuvid through lav video same as before. Playing with the GPU flush settings to see if it will change anything, though i'm not exactly sure what each one does.

Are 1080i files ok with you?

Sorry, I always deinterlace during encode.

Anandtech test madVR on Intel HD4000 (Ivy Bridge):http://www.anandtech.com/show/5773/i...-perspective/6

This looks pretty nice. I'm buying an IB (my current CPU is borrowed) so if I can use madVR only on iGPU that would be a nice plus.

If only Intel would get their butt's in gear and release the damn CPU's! I've been waiting 2 weeks to buy the I7 3770k. I've got a mobo and ram sitting here not being overly useful. I can't WAIT to put that thing together.

Yes, same thing here, except on an nvidia geforce 560! However, there is hope: If you are running the 301.24 beta drivers, try setting up MPC-HC in the NVIDIA 3D app settings to use Adaptive Vsync.

I just did a test with an HBO cap of Game of Thrones season 2 episodes, and it seems to work beautifully - no more presentation glitches and no dropped frames (well, after 15 minutes of testing at 59.940 hz as reported by madvr).

Here are some of the MadVR settings I am using:

MPC-HC with LAV filters installed too.

NVIDIA Geforce 560 card, using HDMI audio bitstreaming.

Oh and I have YADIF deinterlacing enabled in LAV decoder especially for the game of thrones, with mpeg2 *UNCHECKED* in LAV Decoder (ie. NVIDIA CUVID is on but NOT used for mpeg2).

You could give present 16 frames in advance a try with default settings otherwise.
Maybe try software decoding too so that you can be sure if it's either the decoder or (most likely) the renderer.

I can't get smooth playback on Planet Earth blu-ray Special features disc (Natural World: Desert Lions and Snow Leopards), it's 1080i 29.97fps.

I tried using LAV to do both the decoding (CUVID) and deinterlacing: madVR dropped a frame or two every now and then. When the drops occured I could see the decoder queue in madVR go from 15-16 to being completely empty for a brief instant.
With madVR doing the deinterlacing it's even worse, frames are dropped a bit more frequently and this time it's the backbuffer/presentation queue that goes empty.

I also tried enabling Reclock and the JRiver equivalent (which shouldn't be necessary since I'm getting good matching refresh rates) and it made zero difference.
I messed around with basically every setting in madVR but couldn't get anything that worked.

It's the first time I watch interlaced material btw. And turning off deinterlacing does get rid of the drops.
I can play things like 1080p60 or 4k@30fps just fine with 0 drops.
Win 7 64, i5 2500k@4.5ghz, GTX 275 (latest WHQL drivers), 8Gb RAM, LAV+madVR and JRiver MC17 or mpc-hc.

Edit: forcing film mode fixes the drops it seems

In my experience, VC-1 interlaced (which Planet Earth is) is the very toughest material to handle, although it varies a lot. I've had some samples that are no problem at all and others that require my i7-2600 to play without glitches. It's strictly interlaced VC-1 that has problems, non-interlaced is always fine. Make sure you're using the latest version of LAV, it's multi-threaded and that helps a lot. It is possible, however, that you just need more cpu.

I got latest version of everything. My CPU is running at less than 20% & the GPU is at 30%. Forcing film mode seems to work fine, if I leave it on autodetect madVR uses video mode which isn't fine at all.

Even if the CPU shows 20%, one core could be maxing out occasionally.

Seems the video is telecined, can your display do 24p or multiple refresh rate?

Look at the posts beginning here:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=156191&page=492

for more info.

In particular see what frame rate you get with GraphStudio. This is the only way you can see if your CPU is up to the job.

Yes it can.

I will have a look at graphstudio.

But if an i5 2500k @4.5ghz can't cope with this, then what CPU can? Also, when I use CUVID and hardware deinterlacing in LAV, isn't everything running on the GPU anyway? Although my GPU isn't extremely powerful, I have it running in 3d clocks constantly (turned off downclocking).

I don't think it's the cpu, just wrong deinterlacing, that's why film mode works. This content seems to be telecined, so you just need to apply IVTC, which is what film mode does. Since you're displaying at 24p, setting the wrong deinterlacing will give you bad video. I got a Core 2 Quad Q9450 (Yorkfield) and the only VC-1 video it can't cope with is 1080p/60 and that's only because there's no multithreaded VC-1 decoder that I know of (the MS decoder doesn't seem to use MT). Even 1080p/60 H.264 runs smoothly with it thanks to the MT decoder.

Of course the i7 series should be better than an i5. Whether it would make a difference with your problem, I don't know.

Your GPU is VDPAU Feature Set A which has only PARTIAL acceleration for VC-1 so CUVID will only be doing part of the job with the CPU doing the rest.

As I said, the way to answer these questions is to measure the frame rate with GraphStudio. The frame rate needs to be well above 30 (or well above 60 if using 50/60 YADIF).

Note: It might be better to continue this discussion on the LAV thread since that is mostly what we are discussing here.

Planet Earth isn't telecined (at least none of the versions i ever saw), its plain 60i.
What probably happens is that "Video" mode Deinterlacing will deinterlace to 60p, while "Film" mode deinterlacing only deinterlaces to 30p, avoiding the issue for some reason.

I have seen numerous problems with partial VC-1 acceleration in combination with HW deinterlacing, its just a rather unstable combination.

Hm, I'm getting presentation glitches with this video as long as I don't enable to overshoot max frame latency:
http://www.mediafire.com/?4hiytmtbe4b8o9f

If it's enabled no counted glitches at all.
The same happens with the samples Cruncher posted here:
