How do I rip subtitles from Blu-Rays?
Preferably hardsubs, since I'd like them to be pixel-accurate to what you'd see on an actual TV, but softsubs are better than nothing.

They're baked into the video, so you do not need to rip them (nor is it easy to get rid of them). [EDIT: Or if you mean extract overlayed subtitle images, then dont know, but I'm sure Subtitle Edit does that too] Quote:
Sup file created when using DgIndexNV (now free) on eg MKV, rip. Open, sup in Subtitle Edit, with OCR method, Tesseract 5.3.0 {may need download Tesseract and Eng Dictionary, you will be prompted}, Untick "Prompt for unknown words" {dont need get hasseled every few seconds, fully automatic}. Not as fast as SubRip for DVD. SubtitleEdit:- https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=162721 EDIT: From Subtitle Edit, opening post [see in Blue]. Quote:
If no subs at all, then might want to try VoodooFX's Whisper whotsit, extract subs via audio A.I. Whisper whotsit:- https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=184859 (May not work on XP, BIG data downloads required, ~2.0GB or thereabouts). EDIT: I did one recently on music video {live gig} containing Eng and Spanish, some of the Spanish speech came out in Spanish, some of it came out translated to English. {& Eng came out Eng}. EDIT: A few hiccoughs can occur, in one instance, the name "Hiller" was transformed throughout video, into "Hitler" {Perhaps "Captain Steve Hitler" rings a bell} EDIT: I wonder if its worth giving it a go on some Star Trek with lots of Klingon, I bet that some of that stuff was scanned during A.I. training, might auto convert to earthling English.

Is this something that can be done on an already-ripped MKV or do I need to do it during ripping?

[EDIT: Requires NVidia {above some minimum version} GPU] Load already-ripped MKV into DgIndexNV, Menu/File/Save Project [or F4]. Creates *.dgi [DgindexNv/DgSource equivalent of DGIndex/MpegSource2 d2v file]. + extracts audio files, and subtitle sup files. + produces an avs file from any configured *.avs template file. May also produce Chapter file, and log file and maybe some others. Typical resulting files from DgIndexNV Code:
Test.mkv # src # vid index Test.dgi # audio Test_track_2_eng_DELAY 0ms.thd Test_track_3_eng_DELAY 0ms.ac3 Test_track_4_eng_DELAY 0ms.ac3 Test_track_5_eng_DELAY 0ms.ac3 # subs Test_track_6_eng.sup Test_track_7_eng.sup Test_track_8_eng.sup Test_track_9_eng.sup # Chapter stuff Test.chapters.qp.txt Test.chapters.txt # Log Test.log # Avs file from configured avs template file Test.avs Code:
VideoFileName ="__vid__" # EDIT: 2x'_' chars, before and after. AudioFileName ="__aud__" AudioDelay =Value("__del__") # EDIT: maybe adding something like Video = DgSource(VideoFileName) Audio = LWLibavAudioSource (AudioFileName,drc_scale=0) AudioDub(Video,Audio) DelayAudio(AudioDelay) Trim(0,0) # Trim, chop/pad audio to same length #AssumeTFF # ... More stuff Code:
VideoFileName ="D:\___BLURAY\Test\Test.dgi" AudioFileName ="D:\___BLURAY\Test\Test_track2_eng_DELAY 0ms.thd" AudioDelay =Value("0.000") # EDIT: maybe adding something like Video = DgSource(VideoFileName) Audio = LWLibavAudioSource (AudioFileName,drc_scale=0) AudioDub(Video,Audio) DelayAudio(AudioDelay) Trim(0,0) # Trim, chop/pad audio to same length #AssumeTFF # ... More stuff EDIT: Just tried TsMuxerGUI with input Test.Mkv, choose Output=Demux, Start Demuxing [@ bottom of GUI] Produces eg, [dont need Nvidia GPU] Code:
Test.mkv # src # vid Test.track_1_eng.264 # audio Test.track_2_eng.thd Test.track_3_eng.ac3 Test.track_4_eng.ac3 Test.track_5_eng.ac3 # subs Test.track_6_eng.sup Test.track_7_eng.sup Test.track_8_eng.sup Test.track_9_eng.sup

Yeah, I just noticed that TSmuxer outputs them in .sup format and came here to report that, but you beat me to it

Thank you for reminding me of the many reasons why I fucking hate OCR and softsubs.

Suggest uninstall and reinstall CURRENT SubtitleEdit,
it should prompt to install Tesseract 5.xx on first attempt to OCR. Also, I think will prompt to download dictionary [I think I downed USA + Eng].

The second screenshot was taken after I had installed Tesseract 5.3 and downloaded the English dictionary...

After OCR, should SaveAs [CTRL/S] to save as srt file.
Spell Check will be on that file. EDIT: Do all your OCR images look horrible like that one [black-ish upon black-ish], or just an isolated incident. Recent ver$ SubtitleEdit much better than older, if you are using older.

Honestly, I don't think this one is Subtitle Edit's fault. I've never used it before today.

Okay, there are four subtitle files per episode. The first one is JUST translations for on-screen Japanese text. The second and third are relatively normal, but the second has the horrifying malfunctions that I've screenshotted. The third seems to be a more complete, functional track. The fourth has subtitles that tell you who's talking, and includes descriptions of music and sound effects; I assume it's for deaf people.
I think I can get by on track #3 for now. However, I'd have to look at more episodes to confirm. Anyway, how do I import these shiny new SRT files into something like Tsunami or Virtualdub?

VD2 Subtitler seems to require Substation Alpha script {*.ssa}, SubTitleEdit can maybe export to that format, maybe someone else can comment. Tsunami, dont know (Think maybe TmpGenc related). Avisynth, Subtitle plugs:- http://avisynth.nl/index.php/Externa...ers#Subtitling VSFilter:- https://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english...s/vsfilter.htm VSFilterMod:- http://avisynth.nl/index.php/VSFilterMod

Some versions of VsFilter are broken, VsFilterMod usually OK.
Never used Vobsub(), only ever TextSub(). [usually only for testing, me hates burnt in subs]

I just poked around a little bit more and there are a LOT of forks of VSfilterMod. The AVIsynth wiki links to Computerfan's version, which was forked from Masaiki's and teplofizik's versions. Masaiki's version was forked from sorayuki's version, while teplofizik's version was forked from yuuchandk's version, which was forked from MewX's version... it looks like the most recent common ancestor of all these VSfilterModModModMods is at https://code.google.com/archive/p/vsfiltermod/downloads, but I can't find an author name on that one.
So uhhh... I guess I have a lot of options to try in the hopes of finding one that works? EDIT: Good news, everyone! The most recent common ancestor from an unknown author is working... for now.
