Mirror on the wall whose the fairest of...

...them all?
After another hectic weekend capturing either from TV either
from video i felt i should spread my new ghospel to those
who may feel concerned.
According my extended experience with a huge number of
capturing applications i've reached some (provisory) conclusions
on the very best capture programmes until now: VDub and/or FlyCap.

Would you opinate?

Regards,
HN

AVI_IO does a better job at audio sync than VDub.

Can you post a URL for FlyCap?

Wow! Thanks a bunch... I've thought that FlyCap is Shareware! I will include it in my Freeware list today.

The new update of my FreeList will be uploaded tommorow (redesign, new programs...).

BTW, is there a need for "better sync" than VirtualDub when VD does a good job? And I have a crappy soundcard wich causes many dropped frames (VD has to sync the a/v)...

Cheers,

Mijo.

AVI_IO does a better job than VDub at Audio Sync. Even Avery admits it. But how about FlyCap? Has anyone compared it's audio sync? It looks very similar to iuVCR and others where it won't try to sync audio unless you check 'Audio Master', in which case it will then adjust the frame rate to match the audio (bad if you want to hold at 29.97). Both AVI_IO and VDub will insert/drop frames to keep the audio in sync. Avery says that Markus has a better algorithm for doing this which results in fewer dropped frames.

Yes, i'll agree that avi_io is better than VDub in what
touches audio sync. My point of view over the sundry
capture prgms available was based over manifold items
such as: Free or shareware? Overall stress on your sys;
controls over source image specs or not and/or WDM filters;
Programing start/end (date-hours) and overall performance.
At the same site (http://asvzzz.narod.ru) you can also find
FlyDS -- one of the best tunning (bt8x8) and capturing
applications i've came accross with.

BTW, skyout, just for education sake, could you please
elaborate some more on the advantages of keeping the
29'970 frame rate? Thankx.

Regards,

HN

I output my capture avi files to my TV so it's a good idea to stay with the NTSC standard of 29.97.

Also sometimes I need to join avi files (when the scene crosses tapes) and if I don't keep a constant frame rate, it makes it very difficult to join them.

skyout - and 29'970 fps

Well i wouldnt know about NTSC and its demands on frame rate
compliance -- my region is PAL abiding and it looks not so
finnecky about it...

As for joining split parts, i understand your point, although
there are utilities such as 'afrate' that provide fps correction.
But, of course, you know better your own constraints.

HN

Since I'm using Win 2k with WDM drivers, I must say that iuVCR is my fav tool. Also the colors look better than with my vfw drivers.

FlyCap -- again

FlyCap operates with vfw and/or wdm according your system.
Colours and other specs can be adjusted by tabs (vfw) or
filters (wdm).
FlyCap is also less demanding on your resources (RAM+Processor).
And i believe i'm begining to sound overpromotional on it,
so i'll rest my case here.

Regards.

Sounds that way, doesnt it?... I somewhat agree. (*)
No, of course, i did not. The Author's name is Serge Andyk. And Avery
himself, found it so good that he even provided extra coding advises
in order to avoid a minor incompatibility of resulting files with his
own VirtualDub.

(*) The truth is that i accumulated so many frustrating results with
so many other capture applications that i decided to share my opinions
-- but, of course, everybody has the right to differ.
Anyway, destarded, that's why i wrote before that i was resting my case. As i'm sure you noticed.
Period.

Regards.

I must say that I didn't like it that much.
For WDM I prefer IUVCR and for VFW I like VirtualDub.

But ofcourse I respect your opionion and I think it's good that you tell people that there are other programs out there.

Its been a while since the last post in this thread so i though it would be good to get some updated information and opinions on what is the best capture app for keeping synch.

I am particularily interested in freeware apps that can schedule recordings And as i am in the proccess of writing a guide i would like to be able to keep synch without changing the frame rate so that people using the guide won't have any problems with VCD, SVCD and DVD recompression.

At the moment i am using VirtualVCR but it cannot keep synch without changing the frame rate.

VirtualDub_Synch does a good job but cannot shedule recordings.I would like to try out "VirtualDub Capture Starter 1.5" listed on Ookami's site but the link is dead and i cannot find it anywhere.

What do you guys think?

@ Kb_cruncher

If you want VDub Sync and scheduled captures check out "VirtualDub 1.4.9.2 VCR + SYNC" at:

http://www.virtualdub.net/download.htm

I have not used it but it is part of ARS Technica's capture guide. You can check that out at:

http://arstechnica.com/guide/audio-v.../vidcap-1.html

Enjoy
